I have been subjected to the first film many times by my niece, who is obsessed with the Chipmunks. Sadly, this will be played repeatedly as well.

And how much did that smurf movie make over the past 7 weeks? Does not mean its good!

It does mean its popular though, 200 million for a simple kids movie based on a 50 year old cartoon is nothing to sneaze at. And for what it is, the movie is cute.

and as for the smurf movie as you put it lol, 632 million over 8 weeks might not make it good, but those 9 academy award nominations are indication that it is thought to be good by many people.

I was looking out for this release. My son loves Alvin and the Chipmunks. He's never seen the first one, but he got excited everytime the commercial came on TV for the second one. Plus my wife loves the chippettes, so she really wants to see this one. I've been thinking about getting the blu-ray of the first one if I can find a cheap copy (probably a used blu-ray sale on gohastings.com), but it bugged me that there wasn't a DVD with it. I figured this would have the DVD included. Hopefully there will be a good deal on it.

And as for the comment about Avatar. I think it shows that different people like different movies. You may not like Alvin and the Chipmunks, but you're not the target audience. It was a hit with the target audience. As for Transformers. Most of its money was made in the first week or two. Notice how fast the money coming in dropped. Look at Avatar and see how it kept making money week after week. It only dropped 2% the second week and still making over $20m during it's 8th weekend. I think that shows something about that movie (not counting the Academy Award nominations). If you don't like it, that's OK, but that doesn't mean other people don't. There are even Best Picture winners that I've never liked.

It wasn't a great film by any means, but it was entertaining, and I am a Jason Lee fan...I have read that he is not in this one much, but I like his "replacement" in this film (Zachary Levi, from Chuck) as well, so I figure it's worth a look....

I wish I knew where all of the disdain for the Chipmunks comes from. They're great kids movies (kids movies – made for kids) and a very smart re-invention of the classic characters. They are well-made, original, a lot of fun and very entertaining.

Most of it comes from filmatics who think that any movie not intended towards them is automatically crap.

As of today, it's at $212m, which on the all-time grosses chart, places it ahead of recent hits like Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Ratatouille, and 300.
