Sony Prepping Catalog Films For Blu-ray 3D
I didn't see a thread on this, so if there is one, I apologize.. I thought this was pretty interesting.
From The HD Room:

I didn't know Sony had a "3D Strategy Unit". I guess this is the future.
From The HD Room:
The arrival of Blu-ray 3D this summer has us thinking of the usual suspects to launch the new format: Pixar's Up, G-Force, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Monsters vs Aliens; i.e. films released theatrically in 3D within the past year or so crafted to take advantage of the format.
Sony, however, has bigger plans. Joe Nakata, a deputy general manager for Sony's 3D strategy unit, has confirmed that Sony is ramping up conversion processes in India to apply 3D technology to older catalog films. And he expects the first benefactors of this strategy to hit stores in roughly a year's time.
Though an upcoming film like the Spider-Man reboot is a guaranteed Blu-ray 3D release, older titles like Ghostbusters and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man would be prime candidates for the process. Imagine Slimer or Spider-Man flying at you in 3D? There are scenes in each film to support this, and Sony would be foolish not to look at their "big guns" for this initiative.
Other speculative early targets for Sony's catalog Blu-ray 3D library are 2012, Michael Jackson's This Is It (sequences were shot in 3D), Starship Troopers, Zombieland, Cliffhanger, Universal Soldier, District 9, Resident Evil and Hancock.

in all seriousness though, I can only think of one that'd truly benefit
Cirque Du Soleil: Journey of Man - yes it's IMAX 3D, but the DVD issued by Sony is one of the worst looking DVD's; it's soft, lacks detail and would look really cool if remastered properly.

Hey based on what i have seen of movies converted to 3D from 2D.
This is pretty exciting news, a few years ago i was lucky enough to sit in on a screening of senes from Singing in the rain, Star Wars, Tarzan, and Beauty and the Beast, they even showed some clips from Dial M for murder(which had actually been shot in 3D to begin with). they looked pretty darn good. its kind of exciting that we are going to start seeing this sort of thing for home video releases.
obviously not every movie benifits from these reconversions but there are several movies out there that would be cool to see. and for the older movies, it isnt so much about stuff in your face as much as adding depth to the picture. besides its not like they are going to drop the regular 2D versions of the film.

What? No "Three Stooges" in the list? I remember watching reruns on TV of a couple of cheesy "Three Stooges" shorts were they attempted to use 3-D effects back in their days.
(Sony owns the rights to the "Three Stooges" shorts.)

You know what would be awesome? If they spent the time/money/effort instead on restoring and releasing catalog films that haven't already been released yet! That would be rad.

yes... and the fact that a number of Sony catalog titles have been showcased on HDNet Movies and then just sit in limbo is just maddening.

Apparently you'ee not aware of Sony's ongoing Three Stooges Collection series. They released the two 3D shorts with the 3D glasses in the last Volume that came out.

Well, if they actually remaster Ghostbusters properly, that'd be nice. I would re-buy the Blu-Ray for a brand new master, even if I never actually watched it in 3D (since I understand all of these should be backwards compatible).

Well depending on how good the new technology really is I would be rather interested in purchasing some of those titles in 3D.
I've been hearing rumors that Warner Brothers is planning a 3D release of "Goonies" in november, but I'm pretty sure those are just rumors...
