Apollo 13 -- April 13!!

(Didnt see anything posted about this yet)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Apollo 13 for release on Blu-ray on April 13, just two days after the 40th anniversary of the launch of the NASA mission that nearly ended in disaster when an oxygen tank in the spaceship ruptured two hundred. This Blu-ray will exclusively include a U-Control track with a wealth of history and technology information. It will come in a non-flipper BD50 disc.

Special features include:
Feature commentary with director Ron Howard, Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell and his wife Marilyn.
U-Control:
The Apollo Era: Learn about the other big events from the year of this historic mission—without stopping the movie.
Tech-Splanations:: Enjoy entertaining explanations of the science and technology of the Apollo 13 missions.
Lucky 13: The Astronaut's Story: A "Dateline" television piece recounting the events of the mission.
Lost Moon: The Triumph of Apollo 13: The making of the film including behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.
Conquering Space: The Moon And Beyond: A recap of the last 45 years in space.

The best part - non-flipper....So that's another HD-DVD that will now get replaced. I'm guessing they won't have the IMAX version included like on the SE DVD.

Eh, no big loss in my book...the film was shortened from its true running length due to technical limitations (at the time) and the aspect ratio was changed....I mean, I like having everything carry over for posterity, but this is one that I wouldn't ever watch anyway...it's not like it was shot with any IMAX cameras/film originally anyway, so there wouldn't be any of the visual benefit we saw with The Dark Knight...

The first release on DVD (single-disc Collector's Edition) has an isolated score 5.1 track of the terrific score. Dare we hope that we could have a similar track on the blu-ray... lossless 7.1? That would rock!

Wasnt that the disc that would run through the entire score if you let it sit on the menu screen?

Yes it was. Apollo 13 was one of my first DVDs way back in Feb '98. I was highly disappointed to find out that the majority of DVDs didn't offer that.

Although I'm a sucker for the documentaries I won't bother with the upgrade from HD DVD. There are finally some good titles being announced that I know I'll be picking up and I need the money for those. I do love this movie and having it in HD is a must

A bit of clarification:

-It was not a 5.1 track, but simple Dolby 2.0 stereo.

-It was not an isolated score either, but instead it was the same 12 tracks as heard on a "For Your Consideration" Academy Award promotional album that wasn't for commercial sale. The sound quality of that album is better because it's not lossy 192kbps Dolby Digital.

-The menu offered the option to skip ahead to the next track, but placed the last track marker part-way into the final track, being the end credits.

Sorry Blu-ray owners...

Yeah, I was not crazy about the BD PQ at all. I just got it from Netflix since I don't love the film. Thought it was good, not great.

Yet another disc I need to do a live A/B comparison of. In this case with the HD DVD. I'll decide which one to keep then since I bought it before the seeing the screenshots. I guess I have to put Uni on a "don't buy until seen" list.

Never any question I was going to stick with the HD DVD. Don't have to feel like I'm missing out on anything.

Disappointing Universal seems to be going this route, doesn't give much hope for their future titles. I still really enjoyed watching it yesterday, I thought the skin tones were a little too warm, but given it's Texas and Florida settings didn't seem out of place.

Maybe they'll redo it for the 20th in 5yrs. Man, can't believe how fast the yr's are going....
