Since I already got rid of my Vista series I don't have much choice. I definately will pick this up.

if I buy the combo Amazon deal with 'Armageddon', will someone here buy Tombstone off of me (sorry, not much of a fan of the movie) for $16 - and hey I won't charge you postage and handling.

DC or GTFO. Looks like I'll probably be stuck with that damn digibook forever.

I could understand if it was a movie where the DC was substantially different, but there are only, what? Two minutes of footage added? You see Doc's drunk recitation and what happens to Kate; otherwise, it's not as though the theatrical cut radically compromises the story. And, please, don't tell me it's because the extended version is "true to the director's vision." George Cosmatos only had those extra scenes to shoot because Kevin Jarre wrote them into his script.

shit. I like the movie so much I decided to go with the preorder combo deal with Armageddon at Amazon. Now I'm beginning to question that. I think maybe I'll cancel Tombstone and just stick with the DC DVD.

Guess I'll just get the DC instead. :(

I read that these are the theatrical versions and not the Unrated Director's Cut or Extended version.

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

I don't let myself even think about double dips since most of the time I'm still hoping some of the great films (and eventually all of my films) make their first appearance on BD.

However, this is worth taking the chance for me. If they think Kurt Russell is going to get involved and making an even better version in 3 years, I'll buy that one too.

It's simply too good of a film to not have on BD now and considering how often we even watch movies repeatedly (not that often) it will probably feel like a pleasant surprise if they restore the Director's cut or Russell does something of his own.

But I probably won't keep the Vista. When I move up to Blu, I try to look at space issues and the only exception I've made is for Amelie and that was an import BD and the SD was just filled with things I actually do want to see whenever we watch the film.

Again, that said, while very disappointed, it's such a great film imo, I'll still get this not so good version and send the Vista version in while places are even taking back SD movies for credit.

Another reviewers better opinion of the transfer I found on blu-ray.com. Someone else posted they had it already and thought it was very good. I guess this is going to be one where there's going to be a lot of different opinions.

This is one of my most wanteds but now I'm questioning whether it's worth it. I may just wait a few months and see if the price drops. I thought I got rid of my Vista series copy but I found it so that may have to hold me over.

Any deals for Tombstone/Armageddon other than Amazon's $10 off? (brings price to $15 each).

Another very positive review for the transfer and audio with a lot of screen caps.

It looks better than Bill made out it to be. But in his favor, it does look like it might be overly dark.

I think so too, but then again, he said the DVD was too light. So, in the end, I just think it's still a good release. Not very good, not great...just good.

And for such a good film, I'm willing to pay $15 for it and hope that something better comes along.

I'll wait for the 20th anniversary. I just know that that might have the DC cut and maybe more features.

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

I'm a big Tombstone fan and just watched it two weeks ago.

After looking at the pics on http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=41568 I have to say that if they are a true indication of the PQ, I have agree with Hunt's assessment. I'll be skipping this and hope that enough others are satisfied with it that it does enough sales to justify a release of the Vista version or a director's cut. Hopefully by Russell.

Rammsteinfan 04-15-10 11:28 PM

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

Ill pick it up if it hits below $10 but would love to see a fully loaded "You're a daisy if you do!" or "I'm your huckleberry" special edition directors cut. It would be nice to have Russell come out with a new commentary and information on directing the film.

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

Looking at the screen shots it does look a bit dark. Nice transfer, otherwise, though.

I'm just not a fan of darker transfers (I'd rather have it a little too bright than a little too dark). I'll hold out for the 20th Anniversary Edition (hopefully they'll actually do one).

A Blade Runner type package would be great - the theatrical version, original, "Director's Cut," and a new cut by Kurt Russell with new footage. I'd be all over that!

Watched some of the DVD yesterday, and... yeah, think I'll be picking this up. If we get a deluxe edition in three yrs, great.

You can also add:
Sling Blade
Pearl Harbor
Pretty Woman
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe

and now obviously Armageddon and Tombstone to that list...Disney is pretty haphazard when it comes to catalog titles and which version gets released onto BD when there had previously been DVD releases of longer cuts....Sin City, Nixon, Coyote Ugly, and Bad Santa all got extended cut releases on BD, but none of these other ones we listed here did....

The one catch is, most of these "Unrated" versions did not necessarily have the blessing of the director, or at least did not necessarily represent their intent. If you head over to www.movie-censorship.com you can see that some of these (mainly the numerous actioners) contain somewhat menial differences.

I'm not saying Disney has done wrong by creating the longer cuts, nor that they've done right by ignoring them when it comes to HD, but unless Tony Scott et al come out and say that "the Extended Cut is my vision" or something to that effect, I'm perfectly happy with the TCs on BD.

Rammsteinfan 04-18-10 06:24 PM

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

I have kept the Unrated DVD versions of some and put them in the same case with the TC's of the same flim on Blu. i.e. Con Air.

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

Well, I have that preorder deal with Armageddon, so I guess I'll stick with it. I was happily paying $20 for Armageddon either way, so what's another 10 bucks to get Tombstone? I think I'll put it in a 3-dsc Blu case with the DC, and eliminate that digipak from the cabinet.

I read it. Disappointing about the 3-star video. :( I have this ordered with Armageddon as part of their $10 off deal. I guess for $16 it's still worth getting. I just wished Disney put a bit more effort in their live action catalog.

At least Hunt was honest about the current Vista being too bright as well and not knowing which truly represented what they wanted us to see. Aren't the director and DP both passed on now?

So even if Russell gets involved in a few years, while I'm sure they'll do a full restore, people might still call it too light or if it looks more like this, too dark.

Either way, it will be Russell's vision on the next release, if there is a next release. I've wasted too much time not enjoying Gladiator, even for $10, so I'm going to try and enjoy it for 3 years and hope for better down the road.

I'd still rather watch this for that amount of time than the SD.

The screenshots look good to me. I'll rent before I buy though.

I'm not terribly concerned about "the director's original intent." I just want a transfer that looks good TO ME.

Re: Tombstone -- May 4th

I posted this in the movie forum:

Kevin Jarre, who wrote the screenplays for the movies "Glory" and "Tombstone," has died. He was 56.

His aunt, Patty Briley Bean, tells the Los Angeles Times that Jarre died unexpectedly of heart failure on April 3 at his Santa Monica home.

Jarre was a history buff who was entranced by the Civil War since childhood, when he'd received toy soldiers for Christmas. His research on a black regiment led him to write the 1989 movie "Glory," which won three Academy Awards, including one for actor Denzel Washington.

His 1993 "Tombstone," about the shootout at the OK Corral, got mixed reviews but was a hit.

Jarre also co-wrote "Rambo: First Blood Part II," "The Devil's Own" and "The Mummy."

He was the adopted son of Oscar-winning composer Maurice Jarre.
