Hey, I know the other threads were closed on it, but I just got a response from Criterion on their Facebook page about a possible DVD and Blu-ray release of The Game. Their response?

Like Fear and Loathing, I don't see why Universal would license it out when they have the HD DVD (and Blu-ray) already available. Not this early in BDs life at least.

The Game was not terribly impressive on HD DVD though. I don't know if it was the transfer or the encoding or whatever, but it needs to be redone. Maybe Criterion will foot the bill for that if they get the license.

I would love to see a blu edition of The Game but that response doesn't really fill me with hope. Their intern needs to elaborate a bit before I get too excited.

Previously they've said "nothing on the cards" or "no plans at this time", so "outlook good" is a step in the right direction.

For the record, Universal has licensed more titles to Criterion than any other studio that I know of, including Brazil, Charade, Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing, La Haine, Missing, Two Lane Blacktop, Videodrome, and the upcoming Ride With the Devil, plus probably more I haven't thought of.

Such a great film, a shame it's never gotten proper treatment on home video. Fincher seems like he's pretty hands on with his films on dvd/blu-ray.. I wonder why this one's been overlooked for so long.

Ah, but part of the reason this news is relevant is because it DID get proper treatment on home video, by Criterion, on Laserdisc. Among other things, it contained an audio commentary with Fincher and Michael Douglas that was really top-notch. I can't remember off the top of my head what else it had, aside from the trailer with Fincher commentary.

I was one of the few who thought the HD-DVD was a big upgrade over the DVD. Not perfect by any stretch, and short on extras, but it's good enough that I likely won't buy the BD if it's released.

Not to mention, almost every other region besides R1 got a good dvd version of The Game, that replicated the Criterion laserdisc content.

Oh no doubt - we couldn't even get an anamorphic DVD. I don't regret buying the HD DVD at all but I will definitely upgrade, as even if there isn't a big jump in PQ, there almost certainly will be more extras. And this is a film I'd actually care about seeing the extras.

This is the only Fincher film I've never seen, and I've held off on buying the current DVD and HD DVD releases in hopes that someone would put out a feature-laden edition on BD. So, if true, I'll def buy it.

Not really - it's not a bad flick buy ay means, but I think it's his 2nd weakest film after Alien3, maybe on par with Panic Room.

Not in my opinion. I think it's his weakest. This is not, however, due to direction. The script is flawed. The film is well directed and fun.
