Sony double-dips two days after release: Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs 3D!
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Jan. 7 said it would release 3D movies on Blu-ray Disc worldwide for the first time, beginning this summer with the animated release, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.
The launch is aimed to coincide with the summer arrival of Sony Electronics’ 3D compatible Bravia LCD televisions and 3D compatible Blu-ray disc players.
“3D entertainment on Blu-ray is poised to revolutionize the home viewing experience in much the same way that high-definition televisions and Blu-ray Disc have over the past several years,” said David Bishop, global president of Sony Picture Home Entertainment. “SPHE is proud to lead the way in providing compelling 3D entertainment to complement the new hardware entering the marketplace.”

I wouldn't say it's that much of a double dip since most people won't be able to take advantage of the 3D

I've held off buying a big screen HD for the coming of 3-D (which has been touted the past several years that I've been to the CES). Sony is most likely going to have the best to offer, but I'll probably wait until 2011 or 2012 to see how things unfold.

...and there aren't any players out at the moment that would even be able to use it. I don't think this really qualifies as a double-dip anymore than a Blu-ray release would if a DVD's already out.

Wasnt there a article a few days ago about quite a few players just needing a firmware up to be 3d compatable once u had a 3d tv. I also know one of the TVs in our house is a Mitsubishi that is 3d "ready" or "capable" or whatever it says on it... though we will see how that actually pans out...

Only the PS3 will be upgradable to support 3D (from players available at retail NOW). That's my understanding on the issue.

Guess regular TVs can't produce it right... which seems really odd.

Yeah. I guess what I mean is it's hard to be miffed at Sony for waiting to release this 3D version of the title when there's actually hardware/software for playing 3D movies. I guess they could have put a 3D version on the current disc based on test models and hoped people would sit on it for a few months or whatever, but I don't think this is unreasonable at all.

Or just postponed the DVD/Blu-ray release until the spec was finishes. Silly, but it happens all the time with Holiday movies and they do fine.

I enjoy watching 3D at the theaters, I'll pay the $3 premium for that, but really I can't see ever really needing a 3D TV. It seems like a lot of work for a little bit.

As someone who watched last year's BCS title game in 3D I can say that without a doubt it's the best way to watch football on TV. 3D compatibility will be at the tops of our requirements when we buy our next big screen.

Quick question. These 3-D discs only contain the 3-D version or will they be playable in the current Blu-ray players but output the 2-D image?

The new 3D spec allows for backwards compatibility with 2D sets, but if Sony is doing two separate releases, I'm not sure they are taking advantage of that. If the 3D version can run in 2D I'll buy that one.

Thanks. Hopefully they take advantage of that on a film like Avatar. With the theatrical run it's having I'm guessing it will be at least 6 months before a home video release and that should be in for the 3-D release.

Slightly off-topic, but if someone had told me a month ago that there would be a half dozen threads related to Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, I would have called them crazy.

I think it's because the current TVs don't accept input at the proper refresh rates like 120Hz and (I suppose) 48Hz. The 120Hz sets out now will only accept up to 60Hz, and just use the extra refresh for things like motion processing, reducing the motion blur, and 5:5 pulldown for 24Hz input.

Fans of 3D movies can rest easy. You probably won’t need to upgrade your Blu-ray player, and you almost certainly won’t need to pick up new cables.
Remember back when the 3D specification for Blu-ray was announced and somehow the Playstation 3 made the list of compatible devices? It was said that a firmware update would make the popular Blu-ray playing game console compatible, and that’s true. It’s not just the PS3 though, that update will also apply to any BD-Live capable Blu-ray player.
In fact, any device that has a method for updating the firmware can be kicked up to support the new format. Cable set-top boxes and satellite receivers included.
Like most things though, the 3D update for already existing HDMI 1.3 products comes with a catch, and it’s a catch in the form of reduced video quality. While HDMI 1.4 cables and devices will be capable of shooting out 3D pictures in full 1080p, HDMI 1.3 just can’t handle it.
The problem is that for a 3D picture, two images have to be shown nearly simultaneously. Since HDMI 1.3 can’t handle two 1080p pictures at that speed, you’ll get two 1080i pictures. It’s not a huge downgrade when all is said and done. The real clincher comes with TV signals.
Since cable boxes normally show a 1080i image, they’ll be stepped down to 540i to handle 3D. With HDMI 1.3 cable boxes, you’ll have the choice between HD and 3D, but not both.

James cameron has said several times now that the initial home video release of Avatar will not include 3D

Well, I can't understand it. I just can't believe we would need all new TVs AND still need to wear glasses for 3D technology that has been around for awhile.
