Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

From blu-ray.com:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced '2012' for Blu-ray release on March 2. Roland Emmerich's hugely successful disaster movie will be available on BD in two editions: a single-disc release and a two-disc special edition (exclusive to Blu-ray) with "over 90 minutes of thrilling special features".

Bonus features for the special edition include:
Seven featurettes
Deleted scenes
Interactive Mayan calendar
Adam Lambert music video
Digital copy
From what it sounds like, this can go either two ways:

Disc 1 is the feature-only; Disc 2 contains the extras plus a PSP digital copy (similar to what Sony just started).

Disc 1 is a special disc with features plus extras; Disc 2 is just your standard run-of-the-mill digital copy.

However, the question I ask is, really? I was assuming we'd see similar releases when Blu fully took off and hit mainstream acceptance, but now? Especially so early in the game?

I enjoyed the film for the ridiculous shit it was, but now I'm less tempted to purchase it if I have to pay more just to watch the bonus material.

They called Angels & Demons a two disc set as well, but included the digital copy on a 3rd disc. My guess is this'll be the same.

At this point, I just don't give a crap. If it's (a movie I'd actually want to own) not under $20 on release week I'll either rent it, buy it used or wait till it goes super-cheap. This film is a rental anyway.

I was going to say this is a film I would never watch, but it is a prime candidate for a good rifftrax. Probably end up renting it at some point.

Rental first then decide if it's one to buy or not.

thedigitalbits.com just announced the breakdown of the
1-disc SD
1-disc Blu ($38.xx)
2-disc Blu ($39.xx)

What on earth could prompt a studio to release two separate blu-ray releases with just a $1 difference?!?!?

Just MSRP. Lionsgate has done a 1 cent difference between a DVD/BD TV release and the BD is still a few bucks more street price. Dumb idea, Sony. Another SKU on the shelf.

but big dumb disaster movies are meant to be seen and heard on the largest screen with massive speakers - it wasn't high art, but it sure was a goofy popcorn flick.

People will buy the 2-disc release and rental stores the 1-disc. They probably already have deals in place for the big chain rental places (who don't want that second disc anyway).

it seems that sony has now almost made the full transition to bluray!
not only are there for the first time one and two disc editions of the
bluray version like it has been done with dvd for some time, but in
addition final artwork of the 2disc has just been posted:

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/2012.html

the first time i have seen a bluray slipsleeve where the blu banner
is missing and doesn`t jump in your eye!
so i guess they figure by now even customers are smart enough to
tell a bluray version from a standard dvd one :D

Is that a slip cover or just the cover art? Looking at the press ad below, it looks like just the standard cover art...

This movie should have been released on 12/12/12 with the slogan; "See it now, but hurry because you only have 9 days left".

Not true. The first to not have the blu-ray banner would be Family Guys Something, Something, Something Dark Side
http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/a...4/101_0149.jpg

I'm very excited about the release of 2012. I've seen in theaters and it was awesome. So I'll be picking up 2012 on release date. Does anybody know if the audio will be DTS-HD??

At first I was going to say "at least we have 2 more years before they start doing this". Then I remembered 2012 is the title of a movie. :(

Mr. Cinema 03-01-10 12:17 PM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

Amazon has now lowered the price of the 2-disc to $22.99. Mine of course shipped Friday, but they have been very good about giving me the credit back, so I'll wait and make sure they do.

Rammsteinfan 03-02-10 10:19 AM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

Target set is a 4 disc set. 2 discs, digital copy and another blu of the 2012 apocalypse documentary. Target only had about 12 copies in the box when they opened it so not sure if its limited or this was just one case out at a time.

Mr. Cinema 03-02-10 11:04 AM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

Their exclusive version of Angels and Demons didn't last too long. I've already seen the regular release restocked at most of the locations here. I'd say 2012 will follow a similar pattern.

Kory 03-02-10 11:47 AM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

My Target took the stickers off the slipcovers, put them on the Blu-ray case, and threw all of the slipcovers away. Luckily I found somebody who worked there and he dug me a mint one out of the trash (literally). He said they just wouldn't fit in the security cases, but that's just a terrible practice.

doctorthodt 03-02-10 12:46 PM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

For the Target version, the cover art says 2 discs, the slipcover says 3 discs, and the case contains 4 discs. Pretty funny.

dsa_shea 03-02-10 01:37 PM

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

Yeah, I opened mine and was surprised to see the number of discs inside. I paid 22.99 plus tax for it by the way.

The Target I went to just smashed all of the 3-disc BDs into the security cases, damaging every one of the slipcovers.

does anyone know if the upc codes are the same for the target version and the regular 2 disc version. since it seems they are trashing the slipcovers i want to make sure that if i buy it there it has the extra discovery channel disc

I read on DVD Profiler that yes, they apparently have the same UPC.

Well that sucks hopefully my target, if they removed the slipcovers, put the exclusive sticker on the bd case itsself then.

Re: Here we go again: 2012 to come out in single and double-disc sets.

Heads up if you have a Costco membership (and don't want the Target exclusive version): you can grab the 2 disc version there for only $19.99, which is what Best Buy and others are selling the 1 disc only version for.....saw a bunch of copies when I was in there earlier today....

I also noticed today that Walmart has a different slip cover for the 2 disc version at their stores....collectors beware!
