Never seen The Serpent and the Rainbow but generally enjoy Craven films. Is it worth a blind buy?

It's been ages since I saw it (HBO, late 80s/early 90s) but remember it being pretty decent.

It's different from most of Craven's other stuff from the 80s, though. It's a dark film, but, from what I recall, it's more of a thriller-drama than a straight up horror movie.

IMO, I think it's worth a blind buy. This is one of my favorite Craven films, in particular for the loosely based true story it's based on. But as Josh said, it is more of a thriller, but since it's about "zombies", it does carry a certain horror aspect to it.

Cool. Thanks guys, I'll probably pre-order it. The fact that it's more of a drama with horror elements doesn't really bother me.

Yep, same thing for me too. Looking forward into digging into this soon.
I know there is a slight glitch on the Theatrical Cut, but the director's cut is my preferred cut to watch; I don't know if I will even bother getting a replacement disc when it's available. Maybe I will, I dunno.
Thanks for the heads up! I got it at my local Best Buy after work today and they 1 copy left on the shelves.

It's decent but like others have said, it's not a pure horror film. More of a dark thriller. I think Craven was hoping to transition out of horror movies in his career.

It was the first horror film that I ever saw Siskel & Ebert give 2-ThumbsUp for. That's gotta mean something!

Scream Factory posted on their FB page that they will be releasing a Manhunter special edition for 2016.

How many cuts does this one have?

This might be another Anchor Bay 2 disc LE for me to upgrade.

No details. They say details will be forthcoming in the new year.

I was tempted to pick up the barebones release that is currently $5, but I guess I'll hold off.

I mean the movie itself, I know there were at least 3 on DVD. I never picked up the remastered theatrical DVD.

Ah, just a week or so after I bought the bare bones release that's out now. It's a cool movie, hopefully it will have all the cuts.

I'll probably pick up Manhunter. It isn't my favorite of the Hannibal films especially without Hopkins but its still a fairly decent film.

Yeah, but Brian Cox does a damn good job as well with his Lector. But good news for Manhunter getting another hopefully much better blu release with a good amount of extras. Maybe some new extras? Or at the very least the DVD extras ported.

Brian Cox never clicked for me in Manhunter. He pales behind Hopkins and especially Mikkelsen, IMO.

For me, Manhunter works as the best Red Dragon adaptation because of Peterson and Noonan.

Manhunter IMO is really more of a Will Graham movie than about Hannibal Lector. William Petersen is great as Graham in it.

For me it's Hannibal (TV) > Manhunter > Red Dragon

Yeah, but when Manhunter was made Hannibal Lecter wasn't HANNIBAL LECTER. The character didn't really fire up the imagination of the public until Harris wrote Silence of the Lambs. Even before the SotL film, I can remember people raving about the book and "Hannibal the Cannibal." In the Red Dragon novel and Manhunter film, Lecter had a minor role and was more of a plot device.

Red Dragon:Silence of the Lambs::The Hobbit:Lord of the Rings

And, yeah, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Mads Mikkelsen is my favorite version of Hannibal Lecter.

Mads is my favorite version too. I'm so annoyed Hannibal got canceled before they could adapt Silence of the Lambs.

I didn't jive w/ it at first cuz it kept running over the same structure for me but by the last 3rd of the first season... it clicked for me.

I got real tired of Will Graham real quick in that first season. Hannibal was all kinds of awesome though. Mads is a badass in so much.

Mads is also my favorite interpretation of the character too. So much development w/ him. Didn't they get a Streaming service to renew them? I think they were looking for Amazon cuz Amazon has their streaming rights.

The cast was released from their contracts, so a 4th season won't happen anytime soon which is a bummer.

Scream Factory just announced that Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is coming out sometime before Summer 2016.
