re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I saw the TV version of Prince of Darkness a few years ago on the Sci-Fi channel. I wasn't to impressed with that version, but it was interesting to see the exclusive footage which isn't much. I'm not sure if it was shot specifically for TV or during production and then the plot was changed to make it more ambiguous? But trust me, the cheesy fade in and outs to the
Spoiler:
dreaming Parker
just doesn't work at all. Maybe the network censors were so strict, that they had to have the films plot altered and remove most religious references and such?

I hope if Shout/Scream doesn't include the TV versions as a complete extra feature. That at least the alternate scenes from the two films(and if Psycho II had a special TV edit, that'd be cool to see as well) are included as extras. I am a sucker for alternate TV edits of older films, since they drastically altered films in many cases. Two Minute Warning is another film I'd love to see released with the TV version as an extra feature.

Thanks for the info on that, wish I had known that it was going to be on...

Shout! just announced The Beast Within and Crawlspace.

Shit is just ridiculous right now. Feels like we're back in the thick of the good ol' Anchor Bay days.

Over at Bluray.com there was chatter of some Shout! titles being SD upconverts. Phantasm II was one title mentioned.
Anyone know this to be true ? Are some of Shouts titles upconverts ?

I don't think Phantasm II is an upconvert. It's not a good transfer by any means, but it doesn't suffer from issues like compression artifacts and edge enhancement that most unconverted transfers have. For example, just take a look at any of the New World releases that Image put out last year.

Remember, Shout releases what they get. Universal provided them with a mediocre transfer of the flick and they did the best they could with it. At least Shout has the tools and resources to make adjustments to the transfer that most other third parties wouldn't dare do (like Echo Bridge, Image, Mill Creek, etc).

Neither company wants to properly restore the film due to costs. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Did Shout crop or was it the source they got ? Compared to Anchor Bay release, pretty big difference.

The Shout Blu-ray comes from the same master source used on the Universal DVD. Since Phantasm II was not released by Universal in international territories, the Anchor Bay Blu-ray master came from a different source.

I see. So I guess that's why we see the obvious difference.
Thanks for the info.

Alice Cooper just tweeted:

"Just did some commentary for the upcoming #BluRay release of #JohnCarpenter's #PrinceOfDarkness! I still look good!"

Awesome at the Alice Cooper commentary

I'm a frequent listener to Nights with Alice Cooper, and he is a very informative and funny guy. I don't care how little role he had, I'm sure it'll be a great experience.

I really wish Netflix would buy some of these to rent out (I have always wanted to check out The Town That Dreaded Sundown and several of their other flicks they have been releasing). I looked and Netflix carries none of Shout's new BD releases. Guess it's the price factor.

I'm hoping some details emerge very soon on Shout's release for "The Shadow". I'd love a commentary by Russell Mulcahy, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, and John Lone.

Even if they put an extended version as a standard def extra that would be worth buying yet another copy. If it's just the movie by itself I'll live with my dvd.

Eagle-eyed MSTies noticed this on Amazon and alerted us. We knew they we were working on something like this, but this is the first we heard that it was definitely happening.

Here’s what Shout is telling us now:

* They’re releasing a collector’s edition Blu-ray/DVD combo. Both discs will have identical content. The cover will be the original theatrical poster; and it’ll have a reverse cover with new art from Steve Vance.

* There may be more extras, but these are the extras that are definite:
– The Making of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie (the EPK that fans have probably seen around)
– Two new docs from Ballyhoo: “Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie: The Motion Picture Odyssey” (including new interviews with cast and crew and never-before-seen behind the scenes footage) and “This Island Earth: 2 1/2 Years In the Making.”
– Original trailer.

I know people are going to start asking about other extras. The answer, up front, is we don’t know … yet. You’ll know when we do.

Yeah normally not a fan of floating head type covers either but that painted cover art for Prince of Darkness actually looks pretty badass if you ask me. I generally think their covers are okay, although I do wish that Scream Factory would do more reversible covers and have the original artwork on one side and their new art on the other (like the releases of Halloween II and Halloween III). Still might have to order that disc though as I like old school Carpenter and I don't think I've seen Prince of Darkness in full.

Also saw that the Amityville Horror Trilogy set is up for pre-order. It's being released on October 1st and Amazon currently has it at $48.99. I'll probably bite on it for that price. If the artwork on the Blu-ray.com release page is accurate/finalized it's slightly disappointing to me though.

I love me some Shout Factory. They're the Criterion of "lesser" movies.

But, I have two quibbles: why don't they put chapter menus in their movies?

And why do the chapters begin in the end of certain scenes than neatly at the beginning of the following scenes? Even DVDs from 1998 weren't that sloppy with their chapters.

Other than that, Shout Factory rules!

Probably a few reasons...

Menus cost money, and they are an independent label, so probably trying to save money.

Maybe the timecodes were converted from the original 29.97 frame rate to 23.98. (You didn't mention it, but are these the main studio releases like MGM or Universal?)

Someone plugged in the wrong frame or they chapter points were originally designed for subtitles or specific music cues.

Maybe the authoring software isn't very accurate.

It's been a long time since I saw Night of the Comet, and it didn't leave much of an impression on me either way, but that's a great looking cover.
