What are the studio's gameplan for releasing their libraries on Blu-ray?
I am just stunned at the lack of movies that would be of interest too me. Are they planning to release just their past dvd best sellers or movies that might not be best sellers but easily transferrable to HD? I can't see how they are benefitting by putting out such few titles each week. I don't see alot of people double dipping tv series.

They release what they think will make money. They are holding back big titles until more people have players. Beyond that, no one knows but the studios.

XMAS Vacation must have been a real money maker because its been released twice already.

Just wait til the market gets better then studios will be releasing the movie three or four times on Blu-ray Disc with a "new special feature."
I can not wait for Terminator 2: Ultimate Defintiive with all the extras, proper 1080p video, DTS-HD MA 6.1 sound, and BD Live quizzes when Avatar comes to home video.
I also am excited that Warner and Paramount are doing the Academy Awards promotion. The discs may be the same but the new slipcovers justify the repurchase.
And then there is surely going to be at least five Evil Deads, six Evil Dead IIs, and around four Halloweens on Blu-ray Disc. Again, worth it.
Oooh, and before I forget, the slow trickle of product from Universal. I can't wait for the releases of Accepted, Daylight, and The Frighteners because now the extras will be in U-Control form. So yay, I get to watch the movie again and only get half of what was on HD DVD and DVD.

No, just once. The second time was the same disc in a tin with some garbage to make it look pretty on retail shelves and hopefully appeal to people who don't want to give 'just a movie' as a gift.

The Digital Bits just posted a bunch of upcoming catalog titles in their Rumor Mill:
2012 seems awfully far away though...
Okay... so, a day after the April 2010 release of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (theatrical films) was announced by Warner Home Video, we're going to look farther ahead - out to as far as 24 months - to consider what's in the works software-wise for the Blu-ray format. I want to stress that all of this is, of course, subject to change given that we're still WELL in advance of official announcements. But with the holiday season upon us, which means that LOTS of new consumers and enthusiasts are buying BD players and joining the Blu-ray Disc community, we wanted to hint at some of what's in store for the year or two ahead in the way of catalog releases.
So let's start with what we think are the most exciting developments first. Based on information gathered from scores of industry sources over the last few months, we have strong reason to believe that Lucasfilm and Paramount are planning to bow the classic Indiana Jones Trilogy on Blu-ray in 2010, followed by at least some or all of the Star Wars films in 2011 (either the classic or prequel trilogies... or possibly even the long-awaited complete saga box set). As we've already been reporting for a while now, Fox's Alien Anthology box set is also due in 2010. And with the two Hobbit films due in 2011 and 2012, it's reasonable to assume that The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions will be out on Blu-ray by the end of 2012 as well. One can also expect that the studios are going to try to capitalize on the DVD/3-D Blu-ray release of James Cameron's Avatar (sometime next year) to bow other Cameron catalog films in HD, so possibilities could include The Abyss, True Lies and even Titanic. What's more, in addition to the Indy films, our sources say that you're very likely to see key additional Spielberg catalog films arrive on Blu-ray in 2010 and 2011, as the director is a major supporter of the format. Word is that Jaws, the Jurassic Park films, War of the Worlds, Minority Report and Saving Private Ryan are all possible suspects. We also know that Apollo 13 is coming to BD early next year from Universal (April will be the 40th anniversary of the original NASA mission), and with the original Back to the Future film celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010, don't be surprised to see at least one (if not all) of those films as well. And that doesn't even begin to include all of the vintage classics being prepared by Warner, Sony and other studios for BD release - including Ben-Hur, The African Queen, Lawrence of Arabia and others - nor the classic Disney animated features already announced for release in 2010 and beyond. Bottom line... the next few years are going to be HUGE for major catalog titles on Blu-ray. So start saving up your money now, folks.
As always, the above information is to be considered unofficial and subject to change until the studios in question make official announcements. Stay tuned...

You should be able to call the studios toll free and request what you want and then they should make them for you and send them to you within a week. Max price should be $15.99 for people who want the digital copies. All others should be $11.99, except Disney titles which should be $9.99.

When I saw this earlier today, I was surprised at first that more people didn't jump on the possibility of the SW flicks on Blu, but then after their lackluster treatment on DVD I guess I shouldn't be surprised at all.
Here's hoping someone will let Lucas/Fox use their private collection prints to make 16x9 versions of the original original trilogy for Blu Ray.

I have all the old movies I want on DVD, so I do not think I will spend the money to upgrade to BR.
Double Dipping has always been against my wallet, I have held fast to it 99% of the time. Iron Man and The Dark Knight are the only two I upgrade to.
I am sure tons of others share my view and the studios know this, so some old titles will not be coming out for a long time.

But Lucas is such a wildcard when it comes to the Star Wars movies, it's hard to tell what we'll end up getting.

I have long felt that Star Wars will NOT come out the same year as LotR, so this makes some sense to me as LotR was announced for next year.

Also, I don't think the SW films got "lackluster" treatment. They are still among the best looking discs on the format.
Why don't we wait and see what they have in store before we start complaining?

Pretty sure he is talking about the non-anamorphic, ported from the laserdiscs versions of the ORIGINAL trilogy....I'd definitely call that "lackluster treatment"....

You win! You whined about no "originalz" before the disc is at even more than a rumor stage.

And I was actually initially referring to the paltry extras on the original 2004 release (the 4 disc silver box set). The word from Lucasfilm for years was that they wanted them to be special, and what we got was just "average". It would have been great for a 2000 or 2001 DVD release, but the bar had been raised at that point and they didn't even try to clear it.
Yes I have the set, and I enjoyed the documentary and commentaries...but then that was it. If they just wanted something out so that they could say "Star Wars exists on DVD", the 97 SE's should have been released alongside the VHS and LD releases back in the day, so it would have taken some pressure off for a time being and allowed them to work on something really nice down the road. Let's hope this BluRay set ends up being that.

Re: Star Wars on BD
Personally, I am burned out by all the controversy about the original versus Lucas-tweaked versions, as well as all the opprobrium heaped on the prequel trilogy by so many. Just takes the fun out of the whole thing for me. And I speak as someone who watched Star Wars six times in the theater in 1977 because in those days there was no home video option and seeing it a few years later in P&S on TV, chopped up with commercials, wasn't acceptable.
I guess I've seen the Star Wars movies enough, time to move on. I'd like to see something like Father Goose on BD — the DVD isn't even anamorphic so the PQ is horrible — but I am probably the only person in the whole world who would buy it. Not going to happen. So far as George Lucas is concerned, how about a BD of American Graffiti? I'd be all over that one.
If Indiana Jones comes out on BD, it will surely be in a box set again. I am only interested in the first and third movies, so I wouldn't buy the set unless it was very inexpensive.

Hm. I actually like Temple of Doom more than Last Crusade. Would get this box on Blu on day one.

Although they would deny it, I believe the unspoken rule is:"look on JimRochester's want list and make sure you don't release anything on it"
Although I really enjoy my Blockbuster rental and prefer renting to purchasing. I really had to struggle to come up with a few titles I wanted to own for my Christmas list. Star Trek and The Hangover were easy, but in years past I could easily have 10 or 20 on my want list, this year I think I came up with 5.
