Considering Lionsgate went with this for Memento (descriptive bar on top, quote on bottom):

... I'd be inclined to believe that it's final. But the art's fine.

You could get the (rather good) Alliance disc instead, which looks exactly like the old Miramax two-disc DVD:

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc

See I don't that for memento. It's got a lot going on in there.

That Amelie one though seems like they amped up the color. And that quote is weird. Looking that the Canadian one has all the features from the Miramax DVD...I might just get it. DEPENDING on how much that is compared to the US one of course...and whether I'm that picky...which I might for this one.

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc

Don't forget the subtitle issues with this movie. The Miramax DVD has a simplified English translation that's filled with typos. I'd expect that the Blu-ray will use the same subs.

I can't speak for the Canadian release, but the Australian Blu-ray uses the original theatrical subtitles, which are a more coherent translation.

Anyone else know which subs the Canadian Blu uses?

for the Aussie BD: Any odd wording that's Aussie specific?

for the Canadian BD, blu-ray.com says it's "very good" I don't know wtf that means cuz that's all they say.

BUT a user reviewer says this:

The only unacceptable blunder here is to have the English subtitles encoded into the image. No way to remove them, no other subtitles. How hard would it be to have *optional* French AND English
subtitles?
So.....I wish they had a screen cap of that. hrm...

Not really. It is just a more accurate translation that doesn't have the many outright mistakes in the original DVD release. As with any translation, there are subtleties in the French dialog that aren't captured by a translation.

From my earlier post:

*some subtitle errors on the DVD:
Spoiler:
[These came from a thread on the subject many years ago; since I don't speak French, I can't confirm the the translations, however, some errors were obvious even to me.]

These are important errors that cause confusion:
1) 1:24:15 "Go to Page St." is supposed to say "Go to Page 51". Big
difference.
2) 1:17:45 "Nino doesn't get in until 7:00" ought to say "Nino doesn't get OFF
until 7:00." Confusing otherwise.

Some other, less important, subtitle errors:
3) Madeline Wells' husband ran off to the "Pampas" (Argentina), not "Panama". [On the Icon BD this is written as "South America", which is better than "Panama".]
4) 42:50 Joseph, talking into his tape recorder, says "Was that a pre-nuptial
or a post-coital smooch?". This is garbled by leaving out the "coital" so it
reads "post-smooch" and becomes meaningless.
5) 2:04:20 At the end the narrator talks about "Cardinals" playing tennis; they
are obviously nuns.
6) 35:53 They are passing the "pork butcher" not the "park butcher"
7) 1:35:39 "Jaques Grasjean" instead of "Jaques Grasjeau"

Yea, I just bought the Alliance version myself a few weeks ago. It was more than I like to spend on a catalog title, but it looks like the Special Features are all the same. Also, there's no Francais on the cover, unusual for a Canadian title.

The lack of a French cover is because Quebec had their own Blu-ray edition from TVA -- sans English subs of course -- long before the rest of Canada, so presumably Alliance wasn't locked into an ugly bilingual sleeve the way they usually are.

If you're not a native French speaker, the permanent subs can't be a problem as you'll need them regardless. While it would be nice to switch them off and just savour the images -- or for French speakers who don't want the 1080i of the TVA edition -- it's hardly a deal-breaker on a title that looks this good on Blu-ray, particularly if that list of supplemental features on the U.S. release mentioned several posts back (and included with Amazon's listing) holds true and doesn't include the commentaries, both of which are on the Canadian edition. Can't speak to the translation concerns, but I thought the Canadian subs were fine . . .

So the US release is a few days away ... Anyone heard anything about it--particularly the subtitle issue?

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc

OK, I did my own bit of research, contacting a reviewer who posted an early look. I asked him to check the annoying subtitle example that replaces "page 51" with "Page St." Here's his response:

"According to your example, I would say that it has been corrected. That line reads 'Page 51'. "

So if that's any indication, we might be in luck!

...damn, son. That's kind of a exact detail kind of thing to ask someone to look at...sounds good to me.

I just took this quick photo of the "Page 51 / St." scene from the Canadian Alliance Blu-ray for reference:

using the PS3, eh?

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc

The PS3 autofixes subtitle errors, so that's not a fair test.

Thanks! I've been looking for reviews and couldn't find any.

And double thanks for finding out about the subtitle issues.

For anyone who does not have this, Fry's Electronics' Ad from 7/22-28 has the BD @ $7.99

Thanks to Fidodido who originally posted the Ad over at the BD Bargains Forums.

Perhaps not quite that good of a deal, but those of you who don't live near Fry's (none on the East coast) might check your local Borders for going-out-of-business bargains. I got Amelie for $12 yesterday.

That still a pretty good deal for those who don't have Amazon Prime.

I was near a Fry's on Saturday, so I picked up Amelie for $7.99. Really happy I decided to wait on a deal on it (didn't have to wait long apparently!)

lizard 07-24-11 01:19 PM

I am envious of those who live near a Frys since frys.com hasn't matched the price. I would have liked to pick up several copies for use as gifts (my Aussie release suffices for me).

But I can see this being below $10 at Amazon before the end of the year.

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc

Not as good as Frys, but Best Buy currently has this for $14.99, which makes it a $9.99 title if you use the ever so popular $5 Off Coupon like I did on Friday.
