Suspiria - January 2010?

Found this on CNN today:

The label has already re-released 1980s favorite “Amsterdamned” and in January 2010 comes a remastering of “Suspiria,” Dario Argento's stomach-turning horror set in a ballet academy.

The restoration on the Blu-Ray and DVD release of "Suspiria" will include four new documentaries that examine everything from gender controversy in the film to its style and politics in Italy in the 1970s.

“It will be the ultimate DVD,” says Mendik, who says the label is responding to what fans want.

EDIT: It's worth mentioning though that the studio they link to is a .co.uk address. Hopefully this will get an American release too...

Yeah, I've been holding out on picking up Suspiria until somebody included the infamous "gender controversy" documentary as a special feature.
It's about time!

Weinstein owns the US rights to Suspiria and unless something happenes in the next few weeks I doubt they will release it.

I think there is already a Region B version of the film out there though. No English subs/audio.

Re: Suspiria - January 2010?

Here's the whole article:
Tired of getting short-changed by DVD extras? So is cult film authority Xavier Mendik.

Features where everyone just grins into the camera and talks about how great the production was are superficial, he says. Moreover, they “don’t do fans justice.” What extra features do you want to see? Tell us in the comments below

Mendik, the director of Cine-Excess, an international conference and festival on cult film, is doing something about it by partnering up with distributor Nouveaux Pictures to re-master cult horror movies.

Besides giving fans a chance to see cult classics for the first time on DVD, the label – whose slogan is “Taking Trash Seriously” – sets itself apart with extra features created by academics, he says.

Cult devotees have more to look forward to.

Cine-Excess has been given rights to a catalog of 300 movies owned by B-movie producer director Roger Corman and is planning to release 15 films in the next 12 months with Nouveaux Pictures, says Mendik.

The label is aimed at both the everyday cult fan as well as the growing educational market that has emerged around cult, says Mendik, who teaches cult film and TV at Brunel University in the UK.

With all this in mind, we asked Mendik to list his top five horror cult movies of all time. His picks and comments are below:

1. “Suspiria” (Dario Argento, 1977): “Being in the position to re-release this film is phenomenal.”
2. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (Tobe Hooper, 1974): “It remains a profoundly shocking film.”
3. “Deranged” (Jeff Gillen and Alan Ormsby, 1974): “For its gore and gross out factor – a look at depravity with a wonderful, near hysterical performance by the central lead.”
4. “Venus in Furs” (Jesus Franco, 1969): “A psychedelic dream scene horror with a freestyle jazz structure.”
5. “Cabin Fever” (Eli Roth, 2002): “A new talent in the horror field to keep an eye on.”

Let's hope for a region-free release I guess.

As long as Weinstein holds the US rights to it I don't think its possible to be region free.

I think this is the trailer for the new DVD (and possibly the BD):

Yeah, and that Italian BD isn't exactly a fan-favorite:

http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/arc...pressions.html

On the other hand, the color timing of that trailer, at least, doesn't have that cranked-to-eleven look at all.

I know you can't take much from a YouTube video, but compare the shot of Jessica Harper kneeling over at the 2:59 mark and compare it to this grab off the botched Italian BD:

http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/hdc...suspiria01.jpg

This definitely looks like cause for excitement...

That trailer is from the OPs mention of Suspria. Looked good to me and I hope its Region Free (if not, I'll still be able to play it). I read over at Blu-ray.com that a new commentary track was recorded for the release as well. Very exciting. It's an odd little film, but the soundtrack is among my favorites.

they can hardly boil an egg, much less make any sense in releasing hardly anything on bluray. A barrel of monkeys could do better.

If this new BD has a solid transfer, I'll probably import it.

Re: Suspiria - January 2010?

If the company is smart, they won't encode anything on the disc as PAL so everybody and their mother can import it. Because if it's got a good transfer, I know I'd import it.

Re: Suspiria - January 2010?

good Q : companies seem to be able to surpress the inclusion of subtitles to avoid grey imports, but has any company dealt a blow and surpressed / contractually stifled a region / zone code?

as for the concern of short-changing on extras : I'd regard them as a red herring issue compared to getting the film itself right.

As far as I know, PAL is not even an issue for Blu-ray. It may be for the Special Features (if in SD) but not for the actual film. At this point, I'll take the Movie by itself because its not like the Weinsteins will release it anytime in the next year or two.

PAL / NTSC is an SD issue - extras are usually in SD.
BD is an HD issue, and has no PAL / NTSC element to it.

There have been some BDs that have the starting main menu in PAL, so if the disc doesn't default to the start of the film, you can't see anything.

The thing is that the SD content wouldn't matter as much is if the studios recoded existing extra material into either the AVC or VC-1 codecs. I've only seen a few titles actually do this with everything else being MPEG-2.

A handful of European Blu-rays are encoded in 1080i50 resolution, which is not compatible with many American Blu-ray players.

Only two months to wait. Whether or not it's Region-Free or Region Locked, my Region-Free BD Player I just bought will prove extremely useful

Here's a trailer for their company. There's a Suspiria scene around the 2 minute mark.
