This is a bit of a surprise as Criterion's seems to still be on schedule for 10/25 & this will likely cost MOC some sales. I consider this an essential purchase, but it is a niche film with a relatively small audience.

Maybe they're turning it into a dual-format release?

I'm taking a break from watching the Criterion Island of Lost Souls dvd at the moment. I'm extremely disappointed in the print. It's quite grainy, & the improvement from the commercially released Universal VHS & European PD dvd that I own is less than I expected.

I'm hoping that MOC's delayed release (I was told it's been pushed to 5/12) is to restore the print beyond what Criterion did.

I read the booklet after watching the dvd & posting the above. Apparently the original negative is lost, so this grainy print may be all we get (sigh).

A couple of DVD-only releases:

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...rows-72dpi.jpg

One of the handful of films that found Pier Paolo Pasolini sustaining a merrier mode of cultural assault, Hawks and Sparrows [Uccellacci e uccellini] features Italy’s popular comic actor Totò (known to cinephiles as the star of Roberto Rossellini’s Dov’è la liberta…?) and Pasolini regular Ninetto Davoli in a picaresque fable that lampoons politics, religion, and the legacy of neorealism.

A crow gifted with the power of speech accompanies wandering duo Totò and Ninetto on a trail that leads to their roles as Franciscan friars who preach to the literal “hawks and sparrows”, before returning in time to gaze upon slum-dwellers, Danteist dentists, itinerant actor-hippies, and, ultimately, the state of the modern world.

Featuring a score by the legendary Ennio Morricone, Pasolini’s anarchic comedy remains a time-capsule of the giddy tensions torqued by the dawn of the late Sixties. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Hawks and Sparrows in a special DVD edition from a new HD master.

SPECIAL DVD EDITION

• New high-definition transfer in the film’s original aspect ratio
• Original Italian theatrical trailer
• Newly translated optional English subtitles
• 20-PAGE BOOKLET featuring excerpts from an interview with Pier Paolo Pasolini and rare archival imagery

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...esh1/DuRIW.jpg

Decades on from its release, and featuring an all-star cast that includes Jean-Pierre Léaud, Anne Wiazemsky, Franco Citti, Pierre Clémenti, and Marco Ferreri, Pigsty [Porcile] remains one of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s most controversial and wilfully provocative works – a deranged parody of cinema as revolutionary act.

It comprises parallel stories: (1) Clémenti and Citti as cannibalistic savages who rampage a world outside of any distinct time or place, and who push against the boundaries of human morality; (2) Godard-regulars Léaud and Wiazemsky as a romantically engaged couple in a contemporary Germany painted as a morass of industrialisation, fascist impulse, and bestial instincts.

Rivalled only by the director’s Salò in its obsession with the politics of bourgeois degradation, Pigsty continues to challenge and enlarge the notions of what makes for “a political film” and what is meant by “a Pasolini film”. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the nightmarish Pigsty in a special DVD edition from a new HD master.

SPECIAL DVD EDITION

• New high-definition transfer in the film’s original aspect ratio
• Original Italian theatrical trailer
• Newly translated optional English
• Illustrated booklet featuring rare archival imagery, the words of Pasolini, and more!

Thanks for the update. Not many seem to tackle Pasolini's work.

Has anybody else here ordered the posters Eureka sells for Metropolis, Double Indemnity or Touch of Evil? I ordered a couple but each one has arrived significantly damaged in separate shipments. IMO, the shipping tubes they are using have too small a diameter and are very thin. The posters bear significant damage with very mild incursion on the tube itself, but the posters inside are wound so tightly that the damage gets repeated over and over. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience. I have asked for a refund.

I ordered all 3. Touch of Evil and Double Indemnity came in great shape but Metropolis had a large crease/wrinkle down the middle. I emailed them and they told me they would ship a replacement. That was a couple months ago and I still haven't received a replacement. I've sent a couple more emails asking for status but haven't gotten a response.

I ended up getting a refund. After the refund, they sent me a Metropolis poster in a tube they had reinforced and it arrived in good shape. The tubes they use are too small in diameter and too thin. Any injury to the tube damages the poster and the damage gets repeated along the tightly rolled poster. It’s a shame as I would like to have the other posters.

My only quibble is that I rather like the Voices of Light audio track on the Criterion DVD. Would have liked to have it on this release. Looks far better than the Criterion DVD though.

They shipped 2 replacement posters but I never received either one. They let me keep the one I received and gave me a credit towards picking up some blu-rays. It would have been nice to get a poster in perfect shape - but I've always had great service from Eureka.

re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Personally, I'd rather see this in the main HD Talk thread (similar to the Arrow Video thread), even if a lot of their stuff is region coded. This part of the forum is so dead anymore. Even the recent Asian cinema discussion made more sense in Movies than here, and most of the movies discussed there are discs!

That said, the MoC KWAIDAN seems to pale somewhat in comparison to Criterion in terms of extras, but that ZU edition will certainly be on my radar, and as with so many UK releases of Hong Kong gems, the mono audio tracks (i.e. the CORRECT audio tracks) appear to be included, and I see the continued erasure of Weinstein procurer Bey Logan from releases of these important films is still in full swing (although Logan's commentary on the old HK Legends DVD was shared with Tsui Hark himself, I"ll take Tony Rayns over Logan any day). The U.S. is so far behind on distributing classic HK films in definitive editions, and most of the Hong Kong Blu-rays for these films drop the mono tracks completely in favor of horrible 5.1 and 7.1 mixes that severely compromise any enjoyment of the films (and yet they were frustratingly praised by certain folks here who've thankfully taken that shit elsewhere :) ).

I remember you posting the PTU trailer. Of course they don’t just release Asian stuff though, but that’s mostly the ones I’m interested in.

That Millionaires Express release is loaded with extras.

It's not one of my favorites, but That Millionaires Express package is amazing. It's a good thing I don't really keep track of the UK>US currency exchange, because the amount of money I spend on these vs. other releases is ridiculous. Especially when you figure in the astronomical increases in shipping over the last year.

Anyone have an opinion on Wild Search? I've never seen it, (but will probably buy it either way).

According to one of the fans over on br.com who helps out with these releases, it's actually an 8 movie set.

I'm not super familiar with Joseph Kuo, but 7 Grandmasters, Mystery of Chess Boxing and 18 Bronzemen would have to be included, right?

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Nice to see the Joseph Kuo movies getting the treatment. I'm betting there's a ton of newer HK film fans who know nothing of him an his work. Eureka's 'tech specs' pop-up lists these as Hong Kong shows, but I think more of them are Taiwan productions, which was generally Kuo's home base. But 40-plus years later, no one really cares. :) Looks like I can add another batch of old Hong Kong DVDs (with bad prints, bad transfers, etc) to the donation pile.

FULL ALERT is a phenomenal piece of work, from the last truly great era of Hong Kong action thrillers, and Ringo Lam at his absolute peak, really. The car chase and shootouts are spectacular (the editor of the original trailer below apparently agreed). His next two HK pictures, THE SUSPECT and VICTIM are both very good, but not like this one. He still made slick movies after that, and some anthology contributions (TRIANGLE and SEPTET), but he was painting by numbers, in part thanks to his Van Damme movies.

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Another solid-looking release, and nice to finally see the original posters put to use on the reverse (kinda wish they were on the front though, but I know they're kinda tethered to Darren Wheeling's art now, much like 88 Films is to Kung Fu Bob). The original posters for both of these films are so evocative of the HK poster style of the era. Not sure I get Bobby Samuels being on that commentary since his HK films came years later, but he was supposedly a bodyguard for Sammo so there's probably some stories there.

The fights with villain Frankie Chan in PRODIGAL SON are excellent, especially the big finale. Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao actually reprised their characters from this in 40-episode TV series in 2006/7.

I assume the Sammo, Yuen, Frankie interview archival interview is probably from this one, from one of the old UK releases.

Lam Ching-Ying vs Frankie Chan:

First episode of 2007 Wing Chun TV series (no subs :( )
