What's up with Warner Brothers and putting cartoons on their BD releases? First Beetlejuice now this? Of course Beetlejuice made sense, this one's a bit odd.

This is nothing new. They have been doing it before in other releases. Off the top of my head, they had cartoons in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Casablanca.

Sounds good. I never got the current BD, and I love DigiBooks, so I'll gladly pick this up.

Re: Warner to Re-release Goodfellas for 20th Anniversary

Burbank, Calif., October 26, 2009 – On February 16, Warner Home Video (WHV) will celebrate the 20th anniversary of director Martin Scorsese’s gripping film GoodFellas, which film critic Roger Ebert called “the best mob movie ever,” with a new and enhanced Blu-ray book version. Featuring exclusive 34-page Blu-ray book packaging filled with fascinating photos, film facts and insider information, this 20th Anniversary Edition will also include two commentaries, three featurettes plus a feature-length documentary entitled, Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film, which explores the invention and development of the crime genre. GoodFellas 20th Anniversary release will also coincide with Martin Scorsese’s upcoming crime thriller Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

GoodFellas will be available for $34.99 SRP. Order due date is January 12, 2010.

GoodFellas explores the criminal life like no other movie. Following the rise and fall of a trio of gangsters over 30 years, it’s an electrifying, fact-inspired tale of living – and dying. Based on the true-life best seller “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi, the film earned six Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director and was named 1990’s ‘Best Film’ by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics. In 2000, GoodFellas was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress.

Scorsese was awarded the Silver Lion Award in Venice. Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy “The Gent” Conway, and Joe Pesci, as the volatile Tommy DeVito, walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar®. Academy Award® nominees Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances.

Extra features include:
* 16x9 Digital Transfer in Dolby 5.1
* Commentary with Martin Scorsese plus select cast and crew including Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco
* Bonus commentary with ex-gangster Henry Hill and Ex-FBI agent Edward McDonald

Three cast/crew documentaries:
* Getting Made: A penetrating look at the making of this modern classic
* Made Men: The GoodFellas Legacy: Filmmakers Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Joe Carnahan (Narc), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption), and others discuss the influence of GoodFellas on their work
* The Workaday Gangster: Writer Nick Pileggi, actors Frank Vincent, Paul Sorvino and others tell stories of growing up in a world where smalltime hoods were as common as the local butcher or mailman
* Paper is Cheaper than Film: A glimpse into Martin Scorsese’s creative process including rarely seen sketches and more.
* Theatrical trailer

Bonus Disc 2 contains feature-length documentary:
* Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film

* Four Mob-themed WB Cartoons: (I Like Mountain Music, She Was an Acrobat’s Daughter, Racketeer Rabbit and Bugs and Thugs)

Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film explores the invention and development of the crime genre; the rise of Warner stars like Cagney, Bogart and Robinson; as well as directors like Walsh, Wellman and Curtiz. It covers the films themselves, the influence they had on filmmakers all over the world; and the artistic merit that these defining classic films still warrant. Finally, the documentary celebrates the impact that Warner Bros. Studios had in establishing the iconic Hollywood Gangster, often imitated but never equaled.

GoodFellas: 20th Anniversary Blu-ray Book
Street Date: February 16, 2010
Feature Running Time: 146 Minutes; Rated: R
Order Due Date: January 12, 2010
Catalog #: 1000114895
Pricing: $34.99 SRP
Notice how the press release doesn't specifically state whether it's DD or TrueHD

Not a good sign imo

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same video encoding and audio track as the current edition.

If this has a new transfer, I'll greedily snap it up. Otherwise, I'll grumble a bit, curse Warner and move on.

Hell, it might even be the same disc. Although, if the cartoons are HD they would obviously need to go on the first disc if the second is a DVD.

The second disc is just ripped directly out of the Warner Gangsters Collection Vol. 4 DVD set.

Based on the given information, this looks like a cash-in repackaging of the existing disc. To amend my previous statement, I will not be buying this just for the digibook if the disc-based content hasn't changed at all.

Re: Warner to Re-release Goodfellas for 20th Anniversary

Warner seemed to have turned it around when it comes to lossless audio, other than just one or two small exceptions...specifically, I am thinking of the latest DC animated title (Batman/Superman: PE), which went back to plain DD after Green Lantern and Wonder Woman both had TrueHD......

It would be a major error on their part to reissue this title without a lossless audio upgrade....I seriously doubt they'll be able to convince hardly anyone to double dip based on packaging alone...

But they may not be banking on existing owners double-dipping. By repackaging the existing disc with some additional features on a separate DVD under the guise of an anniversary edition, they can charge new adopters a much higher price for a disc that has otherwise become a budget catalog title. I wouldn't put it past them. I'll be very happy if I'm wrong though.

It'd take more than just lossless to get my double-dip. I'll only bite for a new transfer.

You can still get it- and for a lot less than this new one will go for.

Re: Warner to Re-release Goodfellas for 20th Anniversary

Soooo...essentially what's the difference that we know of on this Blu in comparison to the old Blu. Besides the packaging, that 2nd disc and booklet. What we're looking for is a better picture and sound right? Supposedly the older one lacked in that dept? So far...all the same features are there though.

Re: Warner to Re-release Goodfellas for 20th Anniversary

Guess I don't see the point of this second Blu-ray release when so many have been clamoring for Blu releases of films they haven't released once yet, such as GRAND PRIX and FORBIDDEN PLANET, already out on the defunct HD format and apparently looking pretty stellar.

Re: Warner to Re-release Goodfellas for 20th Anniversary

Technically, I guess this should be in the trading forum, but since I think it is relevant, I'll post here.....Mods.....please move if you really feel it should be.

Anyone herein getting this new BR that has not yet upgraded from your 2-Disc Special Edition standard DVD?

Would anyone that is getting rid of their 2-disc SE DVD edition want to try and work a trade or some form of sale with me? If you might be willing, please feel free to send me an email.

Thanks!
