The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

There's been discussion of previous and forthcoming releases in a few threads in the HD and International forums, but I figured one official thread would be most efficent way to go from here on out. Please post all MoC HD news, reviews, pre-orders etc. here.

Very nice.

I'm pissed about Une Femme Mariee. If I had known that was coming out I would've waited on buying the DVD.

M is a definite buy, one of my favorite films. By the time it comes out I'll actually have a BD player, too!

I feel your pain there. I'm in the same boat on Une Femme Mariee. The main problem with double-dipping on R2 titles is that more often than not Amazon doesn't have a listing for the item, making a resale difficult. I'll definitely be upgrading City Girl and (hopefully) M, but I'm not sure about Mariee and Fantastic Planet double-dips. Some new content on both would be an incentive though.

There will probably be very few MoC HD double-dips in the future. This was posted on the Criterion Forum by Nick, one of their label reps:

There are only a handful of catalogue titles that we would be willing to revisit for BD. Among them, Japanese titles such as KWAIDAN, ONIBABA, and big German titles such as METROPOLIS.

 Yes, absolutely, to all three -- especially Kwaidan.

I was just watching Kwaidan last night, marveling at the stunning color palatte (presented faithfully in MoC's uncut disc, which gives it two distinct advantages over the Criterion edition, not to mention the inclusion of a typically superior booklet) and thinking how wonderful it would look in HD.

Absolutely, there's massive potential for it to be a striking transfer. It sincerely is almost like watching two different films when comparing the Criterion to the Masters of Cinema disc -- not even accounting the extra footage.

I believe all MoC BDs are region free. I own two of the three currently released (and I will get the one I'm missing soon), and both of them work totally fine in my PS3. I'm pretty sure they are dedicated to keeping it like that.

For All Mankind is Region B, so I'm assuming M will be as well. Criterion did announce the latter as being an eventual Blu-ray title though.

I assume any collaboration between Criterion and MoC is contingent on each label maintaining their respective region rights.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

A region free blu-ray player is a wise investment. I highly recommend it.

Typically, I favor Criterion over MoC, but I have a nice collection of MoC titles. They've outperformed Criterion on a number of releases. I appreciate this thread... if I could have any MoC title as a Blu-ray it would be Diary of a Lost Girl. I heart Louise Brooks.

City Girl

F. W. Murnau, 1930

AVAILABLE ON DVD OR BLU-RAY

After the visual fireworks of Sunrise and the now-lost splendour of 4 Devils, F.W. Murnau turned his attention to this vivid, painterly study of an impulsive and fragile marriage among the wheatfields of Minnesota.

During a brief stay in Chicago, innocent farmer’s son Lem falls for and weds Kate, a hard-bitten but lonely waitress. Upon bringing her home at the start of harvest time, the honeymoon soon turns into a claustrophobic struggle as they contend with the bitter scorn of his father and the invasive, leering jealousy of the farm’s labouring community.

Tenderly romantic and tough-minded in equal measure, City Girl is one of cinema’s great pastorals, featuring some of the most delicate performances Murnau ever filmed and influencing directors such as Terrence Malick and Jean Vigo. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Murnau’s penultimate film in a glorious high-definition transfer.

• Restored high-definition transfer of the silent version by 20th Century Fox

• A new score, composed and arranged in 2008 by Christopher Caliendo

• Full-length audio commentary by film scholar David Kalat

• 40-page illustrated booklet with new writing and reprints

Well, the new Une femme mariee blu-ray isn't region-locked, so there may be some hope for M after all.

Yes, but Criterion didn't release that title in the U.S., Koch Lorber did.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

M

Fritz Lang, 1931

Of all Fritz Lang’s creations, none have been more innovative or influential than M, the film that launched German cinema into the sound era with stunning sophistication and mesmerising artistry. A spate of child killings has stricken a terrified Berlin. Peter Lorre gives a legendary performance as the murderer Hans Beckert, who soon finds himself chased by all levels of society.

From cinema’s first serial killer hunt, Lang pulls back to encompass social tapestry, police procedural, and underworld conspiracies in an astonishingly multi-faceted and level-headed look at a deeply incendiary topic. One of the greatest psychological thrillers of all time, M remains as fresh and startling almost 80 years on. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present a stunning high-definition restoration of a definitive classic of world cinema.

• Stunning, restored 1080p high-definition transfer in the correct 1.19:1 ratio, with restored sound

• Two audio commentaries: one by German film scholars Anton Kaes and Eric Rentschler; the other featuring film restoration expert Martin Koerber, filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich, historian Torsten Kaiser and excerpts from Bogdanovich’s 1965 audio interviews with Lang

• The original 1932 British release version of M, presented in its entirety, recently rediscovered after 70 years, featuring different actors, alternate takes and Peter Lorre’s first performance in English

• Zum Beispiel Fritz Lang, a 1968 documentary with Fritz Lang discussing his career in German cinema

• 48-page illustrated booklet, including writing by Fritz Lang, historian Robert Fischer, details of a missing scene, behind-the-scenes stills and production drawings

And City Girl is now Blu-ray only.

A heads-up: our forthcoming BD of M will be Region B to respect Criterion's wishes (we're using their master). This will be our second BD to be region encoded (the first was FOR ALL MANKIND, also from Criterion).
Disappointing, but not unexpected. Guess I'll just have to wait.

I imagine it'll come sooner rather than later from Criterion, but man would I love to have Eureka's coverart instead.

Yeah, MoC really have no equal as far as packaging is concerned, and that includes Criterion. Their cover art and booklets (some of which are more like actual books) are top notch. I'm guessing Criterion's M will be an April or May title.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

I am new to this forum.

I thank in advance the replies to my few questions (confirmations) below:

A) from what I read, SUNRISE BD from MoC is Region Free, right?

B) I've bought some very nice Criterion DVDs in the past. Just recently got acquainted to MoC. I saw some people here mentioning they prefer artwork from MoC, another post said it mostly preferred Criterion.

My main concern is the transfer, and picture quality (assuming sound will be pretty much the same). Is this mostly a film by film approach to what is better, or is there a difference in terms of concept on the digital remastering of the films? I believe I read that MoC try to make less digital processing on the negatives or something like this. If so, is this "less processing" approach only related to scratches and dust, or do Criterion alter contrast and all? Any input will be appreciated.

BTW, I saw "M" will be out in Feb 22 in Amazon UK.

Thanks

Thanks!

Anyone on item "B"?

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

In regards to picture quality, I'm bias because I'm a bit of a Criterion fan. However, there are exceptions where Masters of Cinema is clearly better than Criterion (Kwaidan) and others where I found MoC slightly better (Vampyr). I recommend checking out DVD Beaver. You can view comparison shots of titles that have been released by both Criterion and MoC.

IMO, Masters of Cinema does have better artwork. They also include amazing booklets with their films. Masters of Cinema is viewed as almost an underdog compared to Criterion. I love MoC for the silent films that they have released. I like picking up their discs that Criterion has not yet released. However, 9 times out of 10, I will go with Criterion when there are overlapping titles of similar quality.

That's my opinion. :)

I'll be in the US in February, when I intend to buy Sunrise BD and other UK released titles. Can any US based fellow please let me know if I buy the discs from Amazon UK if it will go directly to my destination in the US, or if I would have to pay any customs dues (and/or have to clear the package with customs)? And how many days should I expect from purchase to actual delivery to my address in the US?

Thanks a lot for the info.

It might vary depending on the volume of what you order -- my packages always seem to have just one or two things in them -- but they went straight to me without any hiccups at all. No signing for anything, no additional fees...and you don't have to pay VAT.

A work-week-ish, I think? I'm frequently surprised by how quickly amazon.co.uk orders arrive.
