Re: Simpsons Season 20 up for preorder
I've been checking it from time to time in hopes of good news. I'm glad to see it's going to be like that.

I picked this up early yesterday, and was surprised they actually sold it to me even though they had to do a price change for what was advertised in their next weeks ad, lol. Anyhoo, it does look really good. The older 'SD' episodes actually look pretty fantastic, and the HD episodes are pretty flawless. I was worried how the entire season would look on two discs but, this is a good set picture quality wise. But yeah, I was highly disappointed with how there's pretty much nothing in the way of extras.

I'll definitely wait until there's a sale in order to purchase this set. Loved the image but I'm very disappointed about the lack of extras especially about the lack of commentaries.

All studios seem to be getting cheap and cheaper on actual disc allocation. Fox squeezing this much material on only two BD-50's sets up low expectations for future sets. As every studio is getting stingier with disc allocation per multi-disc set, the costs of pressing BDs must still be some significantly non-negligible difference with dvd. I would have liked to see the season spread over 3 BDs personally.

I hope I am dead wrong, but I could easily see them continuing to release these seasons sans commentary tracks and extras. The above poster is quite correct about how much studios are skimping on disc counts and what not lately. I have been noticing it much more with both Blu-ray and standard DVD releases of tv shows, even down to the packaging. With shelf space seeming to be at such a premium, I can only see it continuing-especially if this release's sales numbers are in line with the past season releases.

I wouldn't count out the other seasons being devoid of extras.

So being an obsessive collector, is there any reason to get both the BD and standard DVD versions of this?

Trust me, I hope that is indeed the case. If this sells in line with the other releases (which I see no real reason it wouldn't), I just can easily see them deciding to half ass the future releases, thinking it won't matter.

Fox has gotten really skimpy lately so I'm not surprised to see Simpsons have this happen. Would have loved a couple of commentaries talking about the change to widescreen HD or reflecting on the 20 years. I still want this, but $20 will be my max. I'll have to wait out a deal.

2 discs isn't bad for the length/number of episodes. Disc One is 9 episodes, Disc two 12, and the episodes are less than 22 minutes. So the longest is around 260 minutes. Star Trek had 5 shows/disc, and were between 55 (Season 1) & 51 (3) minutes each. So they would be between 275-255. Plus there were some extras on each disc.

No commentaries?! No sale!

Although the episodes look incredible on bluray, it kind of sucks without the extras. This feels like it will get a re-release at some point with commentaries and all the usual extras.

Having listened to every commentary on the previous DVDs, I don't know what's left for them to say that hasn't already been said!

This just doesn't seem like a real release to me. If anything I'll wait for some $12.99 sale in a few months.
