Since you aren't asking about DVDs, and there is an HD forum, I think you'd probably get a better response there.

Its funny how within the time it takes some people to tell you that you are in the wrong forum based on your question, they could have easily answered your question. YES IT IS WORTH IT. The quality of alot of those movies are just as good as Blu-ray and lots of movies can be found for under 5 dollars these days. I just dont understand why people can't answer your question regardless where it is located, and then the people who get paid to monitor the website just do their job and move your question to the right forum. Ofcourse this seems like the obvious thing to me for a website to do, but when you have people who spend a good majority of their free time online lurking the forums, who knows what is going on in their heads and why they choose to act in such sometimes dick ways. Get as many hddvds as you can.

Definately worth it. Obviously the selection is extremely limited. But with the Bourne films, Serenity, Batman Begins, and others there are some great movies you can pick up for

Do you own the HD-DVD add-on? If not, you should factor that into your costs.

If you don't have the add on already check eBay. There is a seller selling a combo that includes a brand new HD DVD add on plus 19 new HD DVD titles for $79.99 shipped.

The seller seems to have a bunch of them available as they have already sold 30 combos.

Yeah, make sure you have the add-on. This isn't like the PS3, HD-DVD isn't supported out of the box.

Watch who you're calling a dick, andy.

If I had known how to answer tommy's question, I would have. Sure, I could have offered an opinion, but I don't know a thing about the xbox, and not much about HD DVD or whether they're still worth buying. I tend not to weigh in when I don't know what I'm talking about --- a policy that you should consider.

But I do know that HD DVD is something that many people in the HD area are still very passionate about, and they know a whole more about the xbox and its add-on HD DVD drive than I do, so I thought it was worth pointing out to tommy that he'd get good help there.

Yes it's still worth buying, because as others said, the quality is still there, and at this point the prices are dirt cheap. It'll cost next to nothing to build up a decent collection.

I am sorry if thats how you took it, I was not calling you a dick. I was talking about your behavior, which was. I am sure you are not a dick, I just thought your reply was meaningless if you didn't know anything positve to tell him, so you decided to tell him he is doing something wrong in a sarcastic way like he should have obviously known that hddvds should not be talked about in the forum that is called dvds.

Just go Blu. During the holidays I'm sure you'll find decent enough players for around a hundred bucks.

If you don't have a Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive, you can find one for $50 easily... or hunt around for a $25-35 deal.
Wait for iNet's free shipping offer otherwise the shipping will kill the deal.

As everyone said - I think its worth it as well. I still try to pick up HD's because most of the time i can get them cheaper than the SD counterpart of the same movie. still has good quality, good sound all that. you can get a decent collection of good movies in HD for ~$100 with the player. seems worth it to me!

Re: is it worth buying HD-dvd'S for XBOX as a player?

I just picked up the addon for $25 shipped from Buy.com a couple weeks ago, bought a couple off of eBay at around $3 shipped per movie. It's great to get HD movies for cheap especially if the HD-DVD version is out, but the blu-ray isn't like Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

I say it's worth it.
I have a 52 inch Sony and I watched the Matrix Reloaded the other day and it looked great (can't really say that about the film). Also got Inside Man and The Manchurian Candiadate to watch. I still like my HD-DVD collection.

Re: is it worth buying HD-dvd'S for XBOX as a player?

After reading this thread and spending an hour or so looking over HD DVDs on Amazon, I'm totally doing this. I don't even have an HDTV yet, but I do have a 360 and would like to have a little bit of a catalog of some of my favorites before I do so. Thanks for the info and thanks for the post, topic creator!

I don't think you need to have an Xbox 360 to make this worthwhile. Toshiba HD-A3s are still pretty cheap on eBay, too.

Bought my XBOX HD DVD add-on on ebay for $31 shipped, with King Kong. Also picked up Planet Earth used for $17 at FYE the other day. Tried them both out before I went to work today and am quite happy with the results. Thanks, DVD Talk!
