Packaging is completely Italian except WATCHMEN on the front cover. However the menu is completely english friendly becuz u're given the option to choose the language bfore the main menu pops up. The disc is published by Paramount.

I've seen this set at a few Barnes and Noble and Borders, usually they are $59.99. Also saw a few at FYE, again $59.99.

could someone give me the back story (having not read through whole thread) as to why this went OOP and so expensive?

I found one in good condition for cheap at FYE off a suggestion from here, but can't understand why so rare...

No one knows why it went OOP but it did. Warner recalled stock on it, actually.

I believe it was a limited pressing to begin with. After being available for a while, Warner recalled unsold stock on it like Gizmo said. Warner continued to sell it on their site, presumably until stock was exhausted and then that was it.

how is the pic and audio quality? good extras not seen on any other version?

the only thing exclusive to this set are the commentaries and the inferior cut of the movie.

And by inferior, I mean unwatchable.

^ Isn't it just the Director's cut with the animated footage added?

There's a few live-action scenes that are included that lead into the animated footage and back.

Totally. About a year ago Warner had Best Buy pull all stock and return it back for credit. No one knew why...and only a few copies turned up on warner's online store. They pressed IIRC 70k of these, many of which were unsold. I assumed they were going to dump these (i.e. iNetVideo) or re-purpose them in some silly giftbox like they do for everything nowadays.

Between that and the commentaries, I guess I <s>need</s> want to pick this up.

I still see the DVD set a lot, guess I'll settle for that.

I bought this blind, and I've barely touched it. One thing several folks were doing was buying the single disc DVD of the theatrical cut and replacing the digital copy in the set. For a while there Best Buy was selling it for $5 every other week. There's also a million copies in the used shops.

You're thinking of the DC (http://www.amazon.com/Watchmen-Direc...3897923&sr=8-1), not the UC (http://www.amazon.com/Watchmen-Ultim...3897939&sr=8-2).

Nope, I have the ultimate set, and it had a digital copy. I used a 2 disc case from something else and put the motion comic and the digital copy in that, and then put the theatrical cut DVD in the slot where the digital copy was.

I remember some about the "Ulitmate" set and along issues to lots of questions. One reason why I went with the 'Directors Cut Special Edition from Best Buy" version. The one with the hologram front.

As a side note TNTHD had this on last night but after getting a new Yamaha AVR I might have to throw this in and watch it.

Great space-saving idea! I may have to do this...

Yeah, if I knew where to find a single 3 disc Bluray case, I could get a cheap copy of the director's cut on Blu or DVD and have all three cuts in the same box.
Heck, a 4 or 5 disc case and you can cram the single disc Black Freighter disc in there too.

I picked up one of these so I could put the 'From Dusk Til Dawn' blu ray in, along with the 2 disc DVD version that had the 'Full Tilt Boogie' documentary. The cover fits pretty good although with a little space around the edge, but not bad and you don't notice when it's on the shelve with the rest

Too rich for my blood. I'll just keep horse trading out my other cases as I use up the digital copies (I was able to do the first swap by swapping my out my Avatar discs; I gave my BIL the DVD copy and kept the Blu).

edit: Brainstorm - take the Star Trek 2009 Bluray 3 disc case, put the digital copy in a 2 disc DVD case with the ST2009 DVD, use the 3 disc case to add the Bluray or DVD director's cut of Watchmen to the Ultimate box set.

See, that's one good aspect of the digital copies, the extra options it gives you case wise.

Never mind, I get it. When you said "Best Buy was selling this for $5 every other week" you meant the DVD. I thought, "There's no way they were selling the UE for cheap, he must mean the original Blu-Ray."

Yeah, sorry, my posting seems to be off lately. I try to be as clear as possible, but I guess I've been rushing my posts lately.

On topic, we were in Half Price Books earlier and they had the Owlship set for $75. I'm not that dedicated.

Re: Watchmen: Ultimate Cut - 11/3

does anyone who has this set have two creases down the back spine where it bends?

just noticed this and was wondering if it was unavoidable...

milo bloom 08-23-11 10:03 PM

Re: Watchmen: Ultimate Cut - 11/3

I don't think mine has creases, but it has white spots on some of the folds where the black ink has come off. I've taken black Sharpie to similar cases in the past, would probably work okay here.
