Once again, I think the main concern most of us have is adding more complexity to the already confusing feature set of Blu-ray, HDTVs, and HDMI connectivity for the sake of what is still a novelty, at best, in the theatrical world.

As for 3-D being a novelty in the theatrical world, well of course, they are doing it to bring people in. If it stops working they will stop or move on to Holorama or whatever. But with 40 3-D features released in the past few years and that many more in the pipeline, the fact that they are making money, and the fact that some of Hollywood's biggest talent is now on board, it just makes sense for all of this product to be available in the its native format at home at some point.

It will be impossible for consumers to ignore, because it will inevitably be marketed. I'm not concerned about myself, since I have little interest in 3D at home and am pretty tech savvy. I'm concerned about the average Blu-ray consumer. Think about it: someone buys a Blu-ray that has a 3D version on it and selects the 3D version from the menu, only to find that their BD player doesn't support it. So, they go out and buy the first BD player that says it supports 3D and take it home, only to find their TV doesn't support it. So they go buy a TV that supports 3D and take it home, only to find that the AVR through which they switch video doesn't have HDMI 1.4. I think you get my point. Consumers have already been confused by why they can't play a PIP feature on a 1.0 Blu-ray player. This is the same thing only with more complexity and requirements along the chain. Quite honestly, I'd prefer if 3D was packaged and marketed as a different medium altogether because I think it would be less confusing for consumers.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't disparaging 3D by calling it a novelty. I was simply expressing that it's such a small part of the overall theatrical film market that the cost/benefit of providing the capability at home is questionable.

This brings up another question - does the 3D version have to be a separate encode? If so, will we see both 2D and 3D jammed on the same disc? This could compromise PQ/AQ for both versions. Two separate discs in the same case? Higher MSRP.

I'm not really against the tech, but IMO we don't need 3D jammed in the case with 2D. They can sell their 3D versions in a specialty section and charge whatever they like.

That's kind of what I was saying about the bitrates. Apparently the 3D version will require a separate image for each eye, and the 2D version would be one of those two encodes. And, both "eyes" would have to be in the same stream of up to 40Mbps. Ugh. Even if they have players that spin the discs faster, allowing for higher bitrates, I'm not sure if the discs would be compatible with current players.

Although, they could do them on separate discs in the same package, as they do now for 3D movies. I'd much rather have a real 3D version than a DVD or digital copy.

Well, I guess we can pencil in the $40 Disney titles as having seperate discs at least.

How was i rude? I didnt name call, I didnt give you an attitude. Just said "thank god the mods changed my screen name, cause i definately wouldnt want to be confused with you." after reading what was clearly a very innacurate post on the use of 3D in the 35mm format.

in anycase back on subject, Its pretty exciting that we will now be getting the option of having 3D Blu-ray in our homes in less than a years time.

Something cool if you are in one of the few cities that has a D-Box equiped theatre.
The Final Destination will be opening on Aug 28th in REAL-D and D-Box motion Code seating.

So not only will you experience Final Destination 4 in ReelD but you will also get to experience it in D-BOX as well

No, that turns the movie going experience into the theme park experience. Peter Jackson and James Cameron even said that things like that belong in a theme park, not a movie theater. Moving chairs does not help a film maker tell his story any better.

The 73" Mitsubishi DLP HDTV I bought last year can handle the new 3-D. Of course, I haven't taken advantage of it yet because it requires special BD's, players, and goggles, but I saw a demo of it at RC Willey last year. It gave the picture a lot of depth, especially between foreground objects and backgrounds, but nothing looked like it was reaching/flying out of the screen like I was used to seeing in theaters with cheap red and green glasses. I didn't buy the TV for the 3-D capability. I bought it for the huge screen, 120hz, and six color guns (whatever they're called).

Like D-Box, I think 3-D is a gimmick. They're both cool, but neither changes the story. They just add another level of thrills, like surround sound did to movies a few years ago, but they're not essential to understand the story. Surround sound is now commonplace and I hate watching a movie without it, but a film's story wouldn't change if I had to watch it without surround sound.

From what I've read, ticket sales were suffering from the popularity of home theater and the recession, so movie studios tried to come up with something to entice people back into theaters... just like Cinemascope and 3-D hit movies 50-60 years ago to entice people back into theaters when TV starting gaining popularity.

My 65" Mits DLP says it can handle 3D, but it's a few years old so who knows what spec it's using.

I saw a new 80-inch DLP at Fry's last week (I'd LOVE to bring that home, but it's $4000). It had a big sign next to it saying it was 3-D ready, followed by in small print "A standard for 3-D on DVD and Blu-Ray disc has not been decided upon yet, possibly this standard will not be compatible with this TV." They had a PC hooked up to it with a 3-D game and the glasses setup, but it was running an anaglyphic version so the electronic glasses didn't do anything.

Well, maybe if you're lucky, they'll mistakenly price that TV for $10 in an ad. Then you can try to get them to "honor" the ad. You might at least get 20% off for having to suffer in line for an hour before the store opens.

well i have seen 3 movies in D-box in the theatre now, and to me and many others it does add fun to the movie. Sure its not meant for every movie but certain blockbuster, event type films it adds quite a bit to the movie experience. how many movies have you seen in the theatre in D-Box? Iam guessing zero, why dont you make an effort to experience it first before bashing it.

Actually I have seen a short film with chairs that move. And guess what! I could also feel ants crawling up my legs, water being sprayed in my face, and it was in 3D! Want to know the best part? It was at a theme park! I can tell, your the type of person who thinks Transformers 2 and GI Joe are good movies arn't you? Something tells me chairs that rock back and forth don't benefit a movie like Benjamin Button. How do you eat popcorn? Drink soda or water? Do you get up to go to the bathroom only to find your seat convulsing? If you just ate wouldn't you want to throw up by the end of the movie? What if you have a bad neck or back problems? What if you get jerked back to fast and hit your head? You really like to be jerked around for two hours?

3D, if used correctly, can add depth to the image and immerse you into the world the film maker has created. D Box jerks you around for two hours, and makes the movie goer very uncomfortable. D Box is a gimmick. I can see how it might benefit in the video game world, but it has not place in the movie world outside of theme parks.

To me, 3D is a gimmick. I'm not impressed by the whiz-bang the theatre offers. Hell, I still prefer the smaller intimate theatres that offer nothing but the film over the "Silver-City" style massiveness that has all types of activities in the lobby and huge seating capacities, etc. I go to watch the film and don't want to be distracted by amusement park antics.

Anyone remember Sensurround? It was used as a gimmick in EARTHQUAKE, but as a kid I thought it added to the experience! Kind of sucked when you were in the next theater over though, and you could hear and feel the rumbling.

Considering that today, every movie theater in the planet and every half-respectable home theater is equipped with a subwoofer, Sensurround has turned out to be more than just a gimmick.

But it was LOUD, and that equipment was huge at the time. Funny, the DVD doesn't re-create it at all, but maybe that's just because I'm not 7 years old anymore.
