Warner to release The Exorcist, Caddyshack and Doctor Zhivago in 2010

Warner Home Video has announced a moratorium initiative that will see North American sales on three best-selling titles frozen for the last four months of the year. The moratorium begins September 4 and includes Video-on-Demand, Electronic Sell Through and all digital delivery. The titles will then be re-introduced at various dates throughout 2010 in new editions celebrating a confluence of events: anniversaries, stunning remasterings, and spectacular new Blu-ray debuts.

The titles include:

CADDYSHACK (anticipating the first Blu-ray release for its 30th anniversary)

THE EXORCIST (anticipating the first Blu-ray release and Special Edition DVD)

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (anticipating the first Blu-ray release for its 45th anniversary)

Stated Jeff Baker, WHV’s Executive VP and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog: “As the saying goes, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder.’ We know film fans will be eagerly awaiting the return in 2010 of these iconic films. And we’re going to make it worth the wait, with beautiful remastered prints, recovered previously lost footage, and exciting new bonus content all with the latest Blu-ray technology.”
Guess this means The Exorcist has been delayed?

Re: Warner to release The Exorcist, Caddyshack and Doctor Zhivago in 2010

Apparently Blu-ray.com (or at least some of its members) are saying they will no longer press the DVDs of these films period but the above seems to indicate at least a new DVD edition of The Exorcist (anticipating the first Blu-ray release and Special Edition DVD). Not sure who is right.

The moratorium for Caddyshack, The Exorcist and Doctor Zhivago includes VOD, electronic delivery and DVD, as all three titles will see a 2010 Blu-ray release. The Exorcist will also get a special edition DVD release.

In for Caddyshack and Doctor Zhivago. Zhivago will (hopefully) look brilliant in high def.

I'm for at least Exorcist and Doctor. Caddyshack depends if they re-do it from the previous HD DVD which was pretty meh to begin with (2006 release and all). Wonder if the delay in Exorcist means both versions (Josh Z?).

They probably just want to give Friedkin extra time to "tweak" the color timing.

That's what I'm hoping for. As far as I'm concerned, there's no reason why a Blu-Ray release can't just more-or-less combine the contents of the two Exorcist DVDs.

I've already stated what I'm hoping for, although I'm sure that this is what it'll be...

I'll get Exorcist if it's theatrical, probably just rent Zhivago. I'm pretty happy with the HD DVD of Caddyshack unless they come out with a major improvement.

Re: Warner to release The Exorcist, Caddyshack and Doctor Zhivago in 2010

Josh Z had mentioned before (on HDD, not sure here) Warner gave Friedkin a choice of which version to do and he selected the Version You've... So unless they decided to do the Theatrical one as well, I don't think we will be getting both. I'm not too familiar with the differences in both (minor ones), but I would guess it wouldn't be too hard to make those extra scenes on whatever version HD and do branching...but how could they double-dip you a year later?

Oh geez...here we go.....don't tell chris_sc77 that some titles are being re-released as SE BDs and not even available on DVD or we'll never hear the end of it!

I'm still confused if they are killing the DVD versions 100% or just putting them on hold till the BD comes out. Since they mentioned dumping the VOD for a certain period I think that's it.

That's great...I have never watched Dr. Zhivago so I can at least rent this. I hope Warner will release more of Friedkin's films. I would love to see a better copy of Sorcerer (Yes, I'm one of a few who like this version a little better than Wage of Fear.)

Re: Warner to release The Exorcist, Caddyshack and Doctor Zhivago in 2010

Caddyshack badly needs remastering. The HD DVD was a throwaway. I will only get The Exorcist if the theatrical version is included. I'm not as big of a fan of Zhivago as I am of Bridge on the River Kwai or Lawrence of Arabia, so I'll probably skip that one.

It would be nice if they'd put Caddyshack II out as well. I'd love to replace the crappy Full Frame snapper of that.

Exorcist cuts are so different seamless branching isn't an option.

Caddyshack looked horrible even on DVD. That one would require some major work to be worth a BD purchase.

Caddyshack is one of my all time favorites. Another movie I saw in the theater before many of you were born. This was one of the few movies I was disappointed in when I picked up the hi-def. I really didn't see much of an improvement over my SE which wasn't that special to begin with. Depending on the reviews this is one of the few I may be tempted to upgrade from HD-DVD to BD.
