Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray Next Year?
Posted July 27, 2009 10:06 AM by Josh Dreuth
In an interview with Collider.com, director Peter Jackson gave some insight into the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'The Lord of the Rings'. He was able to not only confirm what we already knew, that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' would present the theatrical versions of the films, but also that the Extended Editions of the films would be available on Blu-ray next year.
According to Jackson, the studio has already spoken to him about developing additional extra content for the 'The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition Trilogy' Blu-ray release. This new content would presumably be added to the content available on the existing 12-disc DVD box set for the Blu-ray release.
It was previously believed that the Extended Edition Blu-ray release would be held back until the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit', but Jackson's remarks seem to indicated otherwise. Time will tell, but to get a release of this magnitude completed in less than a year (assuming they would start after the November 3rd release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy') may be a little ambitious.

I can't say I am surprised.
Hopefully the extra content is the documentary on the last DVD release. Now that would be cool.

There's the possibility of MORE content for this trilogy? I already have, what, 9 DVDs of extras. Probably sated at this point. But I would like the EE in HD, doubt I'd have a reason to purchase theatrical again.

I'd buy these, but have no need for the supplemental materials. I would love to be able to just get a barebones release of the EEs, if it were any cheaper.

I'm surprised they announced this prior to the release of the TEs. Makes waiting a whole lot easier for die hards on the fence.

I'm not sure if you would call this announced. God forbid the eventual fall-out when these get "delayed" with an official announcement.

Actually this talk kind of makes more sense now given this article:

No reason to hold the EE's back if the Hobbit movies are going to be delayed or not even done. Personally I don't see how they make a late 2011 release if they haven't even started anything yet.

Jackson: 'The Hobbit Prequels Are Not A Done Deal'
28 July 2009 6:26 PM, PDT
Filmmaker Peter Jackson has warned Lord Of The Rings fans not to get too excited about The Hobbit prequels - because they have yet to receive the go-ahead from movie studio executives.
Jackson has signed on to co-write and co-produce two Hobbit movies, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, which will be directed by Guillermo del Toro.
Reports suggest the first film is slated for release in 2011, while the second part will follow in 2012.
But Jackson insists the projects are still in their very early stages - and they've yet to come up with a script, let alone secure funding for the movies, reports Starpulse.
Speaking at Comic-Con in San Diego, California at the weekend (25-26Jul09), Jackson said, "I mean, people assume that we have a green light and we're making the movie which we don't. I mean, we have to deliver the script. The studio obviously has to approve the script and then we have to budget that script because we have no budget yet. They're not going to make the film with an open cheque book so we have to figure out how much it's going to cost and if that's going to be okay."
And Jackson is refusing to begin speculating about casting until the script is finished - despite Lord of the Rings actors Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis already expressing their desire to reprise their roles in the franchise.
He adds, "We have a process to go through that really, once we get the script delivered, we can break it down, we can do the budgeting, we can figure out schedules and we can move onto the second script that we have to obviously start writing immediately (after) the first one's done. Then we can start casting the movie once we have a budget and once the studio greenlight the movie."

Wow. I thought things were further along than that.
BTW, they shouldn't even bother making them unless Ian McKellan comes back.

I'll get the theatrical editions but not the extended ones. The movies are long enough as it is.

I will be very content with my EE on DVD. No EE on BR, NO SALES.
Owning both TE and EE on DVD is enough for me, I DO NOT need to buy the TE on BR.
It is an insult that they think we will do this a 2nd time, no way. Just trying to suck the $$$ out of the collectors who love the movie.

Fine by me, I'm ok with waiting.
I also suspect that The Hobbit will never get made.

I'm just going off of what Peter Jackson has said. Jackson also said that they haven't finished a script yet, and the studio wants a script before they say yes.

Word is the Theatrical sets been delayed.
What a poor showing from the studios this Holiday season. Just about everything notable has been delayed.
