Most of the VistaVision HD titles I remember seeing over the last two years have been outstanding.

Actually, 2K -- 2048x1152 -- is only incrementally higher than HDTV resolution.

Ah, my bad.

What I'd really like to see is a Vertigo 4k scan for the eventual Blu-Ray release. Maybe the restoration team can get even closer to Hitchcock's vision with that kind of scan.

Adam already cleared up the point about HDTV resolution.

Regarding 35mm, there's a lot of debate about how to approximate its resolution in terms of pixel count. The problem comes from the differences between still photos and motion pictures, which have very different properties as far as how much detail the eye can see.

I don't believe that 4k is any sort of absolute maximum for what could be derived from a 35mm scan. However, general consensus is that there are diminishing returns above 4k.

^ according to a American Cinematographer 'Dark Knight' article 35mm (motion picture) was spec'd at 6K actually.

Those captures from the Blu-ray are incredible. Not that I was really doubting this release...

If I remember correctly, 8K is the scan and what they did their work in but then the image was downrezed to 4K for transfer.

Re: North by Northwest: 11/3/09

Just wanted to post this again since its just 2 days away, but if you live in Hollywood, Monday night 6:30pm They will be screening North By Northwest at The Mann Chinese 6 theatres in Hollywood for the 50th anniversery as part of the A.F.I. film festival. Its a free screening though i think advance tickets are now gone you can stand in line about a hour before when they open up additional free seats. I would watch it but, I got tickets for Imaginarium of Dr..... gala event which is going on shortly after NxNW starts.

The Blu-Ray is $19.99 at Amazon now.

Amazon automatically price matching other retailers + Amazon Prime = far too easy to spend my money

shit....it's been a horrible 2-3 weeks for me. Every time they lower the price to an amazing level I just buy what's in my "save for later" batch. I won't have money by the end of this week.

If you possibly can, do it! I watched my copy last night and can't say enough good about this release. At $19.99, it's definitely a 'steal of the year' contender.

Re: North by Northwest: 11/3/09

My favorite Hitchcock movie and I'm thrilled they released it first and I'm really happy that I got my copy today. Looking forward to watching this over the weekend. Certainly going to be one of my most treasured BDs ever.

Re: North by Northwest: 11/3/09

So, anyone care to share their opinion on the new dvd release vs the 2000? I definitely prefer the aspect ratio for the new one (disagreeing with DVD Talk's Miller where he says it's inconsequential) but I must say that I think the colors are a little washed out and find the overall picture to be not as sharp. Check out the beginning when Grant's Thornhill is sitting in the taxi cab with his secretary. The red of the taxi's backseat jumps off the screen in the 2000 version where the new release it's just kind of there. I find this to be consistent throughout the movie. Still love the flick though and worth the upgrade for the extras and cover art.
