Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
1. Once you upgrade your DVDs to Blus, what do you do with your DVDs? Do you sell them? Keep them for the bedroom/car? Use them as coasters? Give them away?
2. Same with if/when you replace your Reds (HD DVDs) with Blus, what are you going to do with your Reds? |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I've been sending them to my brother overseas. I've sold some before, but I get more satisfaction sending it to him.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Trade, sell or give to the parents... pretty straight forward really.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
1. If it's a movie I like a lot, I just store the DVD somewhere in case I want to take it somewhere or watch it on a portable DVD player. Also, I keep a DVD if it has features the Blu-ray disc does not...
2. Most of the HD-DVDs I have now are the combo discs so I can still use the DVD side others I just tuck away somewhere, they're too common and not worth that much anyway. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Sell.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Sell. If worth less than $3, give away to friends.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I keep mine so that I have a DVD to play and also because companies aren't good at having all the same bonus features.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I used to have a huge dvd collection & have pretty much sold the dvds I have in order to upgrade for the same title in Bluray. There is a second-hand store near by my place where I sell them and use the money to subsidize my Blu ray collection. Problem is that dvds devalue quite a bit so for one Bluray title, I usually have to sell three or more dvds.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
If it's a film I use in class I keep it; otherwise, I give the old discs to friends.

I unloaded the majority of them to DVDPlanet for store credit. Still doing that to this day, just sent a box for $108 in credit. So that is the main source of where they went. HD DVDs I sold on ebay once the format officially dies & got about $5-15 a disc so I was happy with that. Only kept 3 (Elizabeth & Out of Sight & Stardust ) since they don't look to be going Blu that soon. The ones they wouldn't accept I just uploaded the DVDs to my macbook & then gave them away to friends. Once you really get into Blu you just realize what a waste it is having so many DVDs. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I usually give them away to family and friends.

Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Slap shrink wrap on them and give them as gifts.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Sell them.
I'll keep them if the Blu-ray doesn't carry over all the supplemental material and/or if the DVD contains collectible packaging. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I sell them back to Second Spin and buy more Blu. Although, sometimes if it's a title I know someone might like I'll just give it away.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I have sold all of my DVD collection (Which is 500) for Blu-Ray but kept the TV shows and wrestling DVDs since they probably won't come out in Blu-Ray
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
1. Usually check with a few friends to see if they want it. Then if not I'll sell them.
2. Haven't really replaced any of my reds with blu. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Sell them! There are some exceptions, though. I don't see myself selling my 2-disc Big Trouble in Little China, for example, when it comes to blu-ray this summer.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
If the special features are all on the BR, I will sell it or give it to a friend. If not, I put the DVD into a paper sleeve and insert it in the BR case.

I would say, Once you really get into downloading movies you just realize what a waste it is having so many DVDs. :) Because I collect just as many Blu-rays as I did DVDs. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I've only upgraded from DVD to BLU on two titles ("Silence of the Lambs" and "The Lost Boys") and in both cases I've given the previous releases to my parents.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I had around 500 DVDs at the peak of my collection. Now, I have about 50 Blu-rays and about 50 DVDs. When DVDs first came out, I had this NEED to collect every movie. I don't feel that need anymore. I now only collect movies that I really want to watch and re-watch.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
For the few DVDs I have upgraded to Blu, I've traded them in at Zia for more Blu-ray.
At the current moment, there's only two DVDs I have not traded in that I have upgraded to Blu: - Live Free or Die Hard (unrated cut plus steelbook packaging) - Van Wilder (additional bonus features on DVD plus topless menus) |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I just donated a bunch of DVDs to my local library (along with several books and old CDs that I bought remasters of).
A few were because I've upgraded them to Blu/HDDVD, most were because I just didn't see myself watching them much anymore. I'm sure there's some items I could have made some decent money on (box sets, TV sets, etc.), but basically I'm too lazy to put all that stuff on Amazon/Half/eBay, and would rather just have the library keep what they want to circulate through their branches, and then sell off whatever they're don't want/have enough copies of. Just an alternative idea if people are wondering what to do with their older DVDs. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Generally sell them.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
1.I gave a lot of them away to my nephew. They are virtually worthless now, and not worth the hassle it would take to sell a quantity that large.
2.I don't think I iwll ever replace my current HD DVD's with the BD counterpart. Just not cost efficient considering some of the rock bottom prices I paid. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
Keep them all.
My blu-rays are playable in exactly one room on the planet (to me). My DVDs can be played literally anywhere. I'm more of a homebody than anyone here I imagine, but I still end up watching about half on my discs in places other than my living room (bedroom, car, work, sister's house, etc). Plus most blu-rays don't carry over all of the special features, and I'm a completest. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
i usually try to sell them. Now if a BD comes w/ a digital copy, i'm leaning towards ditching that disc and replacing it w/ the DVD.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
If the BD/HD DVD does not carry over all the special features I make a copy and stick it in the case.
The DVDs I no longer need (upgrade to Blu etc) I try and sell, but if they go for less than $5, I typically sell them on Craigslist in lots. I still have yet to dump a HD DVD for a Blu-ray (and won't unless its a major PQ restoration, DD+ to DTS MA is not enough). |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I've kept all my laserdiscs and DVD's as I've upgraded through the years. Too much hassle to sell.

Out of curiousity, do you store the original DVD cases? |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I've given a few away to family. Back to FYE during the brown bag promotion with the rest of the lot.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I trade the ones with decent re-sale value to FYE, and give the others to my parents.
|
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
My girlfriend gets first crack at any of the movies I upgrade, assuming she enjoys the film.
If she doesn't, they usually go to friends who enjoy the film but don't have BD/HD players. If all else fails they get traded in. |
Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I'll sell any title I upgrade that is worth $5+ but I haven't taken the time to do that since I have a few thousand DVD's to look through (one day I'll alphabetize them). If I won't get much for the DVD, I'll just keep it since I can travel with it and play on my laptop, or in my bedroom. I'm trying not to upgrade "everything" to BD though because of the expense. I can live with comedies in SD. Action/Sci-Fi I usually upgrade.
As for HD-DVD, I refuse to part with any of them. I submitted 25 to red2blu to get the BD version, but except for the few cases where the BD is superior, I will just sell those BD's. There is nothing wrong with my HD-DVD's nor my 3 HD-DVD players... |
I usually sell upgraded DVDs, preferably before the BD is released so that I can get a decent price. If the value is too little to bother selling, I give them away, usually to my local library.
I would never buy a BD version of a title I already have on HD DVD, so I keep those, save for the ones I only wanted to watch once. In general, I've been trying to "weed" my DVD collection of things that I don't think that I will want to watch again. Unlike some others here, there are very few unwatched DVDs in my collection. I do have a lot of unwatched BDs, but that's because I wasn't able to find a player I wanted until last month. |

Re: Once you upgrade, what do you do with your 'old' discs?
I probably purchased about 2700-3000 dvds since they first came out. 1500 were for my kids when they were living with their mother. In the past year I just about sold everything else first on our local craigslists and then to DvdPlanet. I just sent off my last box for a credit off $108. Most were sent in before the last 25% sale. I had a total of about $1700-$1800 in credit. I think I have about 25 dvds left.
I also at one time sold off over 200 of 250 of my hd-dvd collection. Got $7-$15 for most of them. But since prices have really come down I am back up to over 200 hd-dvds. I just brought 8 more from that trader person this week for about $27. I also picked up a A3 for $25, A2 for $30, and another A30 for $50 on out local craigslists. I almost picked up a A1 but I wasn't willing to pay the $40 asking price. My blu-ray collection is now up to about 275-280. I buy most of them from Amazon.com Market place and been getting some greet prices from their. Lots of blu-rays for under $10 and that includes the $2.98 shipping charge. |
