What's wrong with my Blu-Ray player?!?!?!

I have a Sharp DD-HP20U and it won't play Blu-Ray discs anymore! It worked just fine two days ago, when I watched my BD of The Dark Knight. But now whenever I put in a Blu-Ray disc it pops back out and the screen reads "INCOMPATIBLE DISC".

Strangest thing is, it will still play Standard DVDs.

Anyone have the slightest idea what might be going on here?

You're not alone, found this review on Amazon (posted 10 days ago):

[... ]Then in late 2008, for some unknown reason, every new BlueRay disk I attempt to play resulted in an "incompatible disk" error within 20 seconds of inserting it. I've tried many tricks to get it to play, but with no luck. I contacted Sharpe 3 months ago with no success... I'm attempting to push the issue with them again to see if they will address the problem. The player works if you wish to play standard DVD, but I didn't need an expensive new player for standard DVDs!"

Have you updated the Firmware recently?

Regardless, the Sharp player is not the best player on the market and it may be time to upgrade to a player that's a bit more...adaptive.

Most recent update for this model is from October of '08.

I'd recommend looking at the Sony S360 or Panasonic 60. I told you to dump this player back in January... http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9223357-post4.html

Unfortunately your only options are: 1. Send the player into Sharp for repair (in which case when you finally get it back you'll still have to pray it'll continue to play Blu-rays) or 2. Buy yourself a more dependable player (as Gizmo suggested either a Sony or Panasonic).

Drive has failed. Time for repair or a new player.

I love Panny products, personally. I use a PS3, but I'll get a Panny set-top eventually.

The load times are ten times faster, and it'll play any disc u throw at it.

Plus u can play games on it and surf the web, which r added bonuses. If I were u, I'd buy a pS3.

Quick question that I'll just throw in here. Won a Samsung player. I think it's the first, and yes I have completely updated the firmware. Haven't bought any BDs for it, but I won the CSI giveaway in the premium forum. I have not attempted to watch anything else. I put it in, and it forced me to watch the Star Trek TOS trailer. I couldn't skip, menu, anything. So is this standard on Bluray? Forced trailers? Please tell me I just couldn't find the right button to hit, even though I hit them all.

It all depends, but it doesn't happen often, just like on DVD. And no, you can't skip it (at least I couldn't find the button). I think I just used the fast forward button.

It wouldn't even let me fast forward. Every button seemed to be locked. Incredibly frustrating.

How long ago did you win a 3 year old Samsung Blu-ray player (or have you just had it in its box)?

I have the same exact model at OP, and other then firmware updates, I haven't had a problem with it.

However I can't wait for it to die so I can justify buying a PS3

Technically my mom won it, but she didn't have an HDTV so she gave it to me. It was a few weeks ago and its the BDP 1500. Has it really been 3 years already?

The 1500 is Samsungs 4th generation BD Player (you said the first Samsung player which was the horrible 1000). You're pretty much good to go on it. Its the first of Samsungs players that don't, well, suck. Make sure you turn off "System Messages" in the Menu though.

As for your Q - I've never had a BD where I couldn't skip through a preview.

Yeah, could be a fluke. I'll pop mine in later to see though I do remember being unable to skip (and yes, it was annoying).
