This Is Spinal Tap: 7/28/09
There has already been some discussion of this release, but it deserves it's own thread. Here are the specs and cover art, courtesy of DVD Active:
It's too bad the extras from the Criterion laserdisc weren't ported over, making this the definitive edition, but them's the breaks.
...And please, let's not have any jokes about the volume going to eleven.
MGM Home Entertainment has announced a 2-disc Blu-ray release of This is Spinal Tap for the 28th July. Retail will be $34.99. The film will be presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, along with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Extras will include commentary by the Members of Spinal Tap, over 1 hour of deleted scenes and outtakes, a Catching Up With Marty DiBergi featurette, Flower People Press Conference, music videos ("Gimme Some Money", "(Listed to the) Flower People", "Hell Hole", "Big Bottom"), a "Stonehenge" Performance at the 2007 Live Earth Concert, a National Geographic Stonehenge Interview with Nigel Tufnel, a Spinal Tap Appearance on The Joe Franklin Show, and more. List price is $34.98.

I dislike the special features being on the second disc but at least these kinds of releases (BD & SD) will attract people like my brother to invest in BD since they will also get an SD copy. I do wish they would take the time and make each disc an inclusive. It is not like there is a space issue for the BD.

I can't imagine a movie shot on 16mm being worth the upgrade. I already have both DVD versions so this is a pass for me now and a purchase when it is $15 or less down the road.

Right. Depending on what your definition of movie entails, it is probably a good idea to take a look at Pride and Prejudice, arguably one of the best upgrades to be released on Blu-ray since the format was launched.

No kidding. This was super low budget, shot with handheld cameras and done documentary style on 16MM. There is only so much more you can get out of this image. I'm sure it will be a slight improvement over the DVD, but that will not get me to triple dip until this one is much cheaper. However, I shouldn't have said 16mm movies in general. I was thinking more of the stuff like this and Clerks.

This is the kind of title that I will get during a CH B1G1F sale so that I don't feel like it is much of a loss to upgrade.

Shit. Sandwich.
What a pack of assholes MGM are.
I sold my Criterion DVD (for more than a paid for it, lol) in anticipation of their BD release after they put out their first press release touting a Super Special Edition with the Criterion and MGM extras... and now they churn out a BD that's basically EXACTLY the same as their old Special Edition release just as I feared when the BD was reannounced for a the 6th time. To top it off they put a second DVD (not BD) in the set with 2 featurettes totalling less than 1GB of data so they could call it a "2-Disc Special Edition!!!one1!!"
That's practically a crime. False Advertising. If they didn't secure the rights to the commentaries from Criterion, etc... they should have never announced it.
They can go FUCK Themselves.
Luckily I still have the Criterion LD or I'd be even more pissed.

EDIT: A press release, hmm...still, I don't know that I'd have jumped the gun so quickly on that one.

When in the world did they claim they had the CC extras? And even if they did, if I had one of the most sought-after DVDs ever, I think I would hold onto it until I was sure.

Silly me.
Anyways... as I said... I've got the LD.

Okay wait. So they have an hour of deleted scenes, but they are different than the deleted scenes on my Criterion DVD? Oh boy, I'm just going to stick with what I got, thank you.

Re: This Is Spinal Tap: 7/28/09
Well, I haven't seen the press release. You'd think they'd make a big deal out of it if it was really happening. Since MGM releases have been so terrible recently (movie-only BDs and the features on the existing SE DVDs), I don't think I'd have believed it in that case. But that's me.
