Encrypted v Unencrypted Content (e.g. 1080i v 480p)
Is there any way to tell if content/discs are encrypted or unencrypted prior to buying? It's not a big worry, but if somebody is still using component I assume it would be nice to know if you'd at lead have HD resolution instead of a downgrade to 480.

You're talking about the Image Constraint Token, not encryption. Just about any disc you buy, if not every disc, will be encrypted.
As far as I know, they have not implemented ICT on any US discs. There are a couple of discs overseas that use it, I think. Supposedly they won't do it until 2012, but I wonder if they'll even bother at all.

My mistake - yes I was referring to the ICT. Thanks for the info!

I'd be really upset if they initiated this. My TV only has component and I can't afford to buy a new TV (I can barely afford to buy any Blu-ray movies). It bugs me enough that I don't get upconversion, but if I had to give up HD quality on my Blu-rays, I would be irate. And since there are probably a lot of people who still have earlier HDTV sets that don't have HDMI, it would be a bad move on their part. It's already bad enough that they have issues with certain movies unless you get a firmware update (and I felt sorry for all those people walking out of Wal-Mart with their $130 Magnavox blu-ray player on BF since they may never get a firmware update and will probably have problems with a lot of movies), but if they alienate a lot of people who jumped on HDTV early (either by spending tons of money to get one, or like I did found one on clearance when the new models came in) they would be hurting their status with a lot of people.

Actually, the reason I think they may not bother is because it's pointless now. The idea was that the digital data was secure, so they would stop people from capturing the HD signal over analog.
