Maybe I'm just a freak, but videogames are the same way for me...

I think most would be surpised at the percentage of music, video, games, and books that go unused after retail purchase.

The movie business found out that just having floorspace with product at big stores... drives sales.

Not true Eddie, I'm just one person, and I can say that I already have a bunch of unwatched Blu-ray titles, and it's because I wanted to upgrade my old DVD's because I liked particular films so much. It's DVD all over again, but perhaps for different reasons.

I wouldn't know anything about that.

I'm glad to see this thread take off.

As for me, I currently own exactly 24 Blu-rays (started last Black Friday). Of those, exactly half are movies I have/had on DVD and upgraded. Of those 12, ALL were obtained for $10-20, even my Firefly set. If the prices were not that good already, I would not be so inclined to be upgrading so many so fast.

Lucky stumble in the exchange forum. Being a used Canadian version helped a bit too I think. didn't Amazon.ca have it new for like $25-30 a while back?

I totally agree, but that's not really the point I was trying to make. When DVD launched there was no Amazon.com, and the average person did not shop on-line. A lot has changed in the retail landscape in since DVD launched.

Actually there was, but it hadn't grown to what it is today yet.

That is exactly what I mean. There has always been mail order, but everyone and their mother-in-law knows (and for the most part, trusts) Amazon. That did not exist when DVD was launched.
