Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

Mentioned in the Hannibal Lector Anthology thread, but these should probably get their own thread as well. From Blu-ray.com:

MGM Gives Blu-ray the Chills in September

Posted May 27, 2009 05:25 PM by Juan Calonge

MGM In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that MGM Home Entertainment will release a set of highly-appreciated horror movies on September 15: 'Child's Play', 'Misery', and 'The Hannibal Lecter Anthology', which will include 'Manhunter', 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal'. No spec information is available at this time.

Now what are our chances of getting the rest of the Child's Play franchise in HD :)

That'd be up to Universal. They did release Seed of Chucky on HD DVD, so if they play catchup...

I think Seed of Chucky is out or coming soon to BD in Canada.

I hope none of those aren't old MPEG-2 early 2007 transfers that have been sitting on the shelf. We know SOTL was.

I'm cool with it if they look like SOTL does, what a great BD!

It's out in Canada already. No idea if Universal will release it on Blu-ray this year...but now with the first film coming out they likely will.

SOTL could have looked even better if MGM did some work on it :(

Probably... I hadn't seen it in years though, and was really blown away by the BD, what a great movie. Projected, it looks very, very film-like to me.

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

I thought SOTL was a mixed bag as well.

The new dvd of Child's Play came out in Sept. '08, so that gives me hope this is a fresher AVC transfer. The Misery SE, however, was out in Oct. '07.

But then again, they may surprise us like they did with Carrie. I would have bet money that was MPEG-2, but it was AVC. Didn't look that great though, but that's a source issue.

tylergfoster 05-27-09 07:04 PM

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

I'm okay if it's like SOTL, as long as it's NOT like The Graduate and Road House. I like the idea of including SD-DVDs instead of Digital Copies, I don't like the studios just cheapening out and using them as a way of including the special features along with a feature-free BD.

Carrie was MPEG2. Amityville Horror was the one where we thought it would be MPEG2 (being an CES 07 catchup title) but ended up being MPEG4. Both, of course, sans any extras and on BD25s.

I'll only buy Child's Play if it's done right, so a proper encode with a high bitrate is necessary.

Wait a sec, what are these BD/DVD Combos? Does it include a SD copy, or are they just like the bastard HD/DVD Combo discs?

Why the hell didn't they just release Child's Play when the dvd came out last year? It better be PHENOMENAL a/v for me to upgrade.

I'm guessing these will be barebones blu-rays with the dvd counterparts holding all the features... I already have the Chucky's 20th dvd but I may grab the blu-ray if the reviews are good and it gets cheap enough - if not I'll stick with the dvd.

Mr. Cinema 07-22-09 06:10 PM

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

They're both AVC encodes. That probably increases the chances that the BDs will have the extras.

Gizmo 07-22-09 06:29 PM

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

Pretty sure Child's Play was 'done' last year when the DVD was re-released (they are re-re-releasing it again?)...so good chances it MPEG4. Likely with Misery.

* Evil Comes in Little Packages
This list of features is horribly messy. I feel like "Evil Comes in Little Packages" and "Evil Comes in Small Packages" are probably the same thing, which would be the title of the main documentary, comprised of the featurettes "The Birth of Chucky", "Creating the Horror" and "Unleashed - Chucky: Building a Nightmare". I also think that "Chucky's Thoughts", "Chucky on Filmmaking" and "Up Close and Personal With Chucky" may be the select scene commentaries. If this is all true, it shortens the list of features by five.

On the other hand, "Designer Toy" and "Chucky's Back, Bitches" may be "new" featurettes that didn't fit on the SD-DVD.

If the extras are on the BD for Child's Play, I'll buy it. Pass if not. Sounds like they should be, so far.

HD Digest says both Misery and Child's Play will come with a dvd of the movie. Sounds like the BD's may be barebones after all.

Gizmo 09-09-09 05:41 PM

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

It appears Misery is a barebones BD with a 'bonus' DVD with all the special features. Childs Play appears to be a BD with special features + bonus' DVD with all the special features (according to a AVS poster).

Just a heads up here, one of my local Best Buy's had ONE copy of Child's Play today, the other had received none.

Mine had about 5 copies of Child's play, 3 Misery and 3 Lecter sets. I was actually pretty surprised.

I got my copy at BB but I did it for instore pickup so I don't know how many they had.

Fry's had jack shit in the way of catalog titles this morning. No CP or Misery, and no Deep Impact, AWIL and Army of Darkness for that matter. Never got last week's WB's either. So lame.

Just got done watching "Misery" on BD via Netflix. And the glowing PQ reviews I've seen so far are spot on. The image is spectacular. Especially for a film almost 20 years old. Take note Warner Brothers. THIS is how you do older movies on BD.

Well, except for the part where the disc doesn't have the features on it.

I suppose my resistance to this practice is coming down, since I'm considering buying several of the MGM titles I know are like this (and I do like having a copy of the SD-DVD rather than a worthless Digital Copy disc), but it's still a bit of a pain. At the very least, they could include the audio commentaries.

Gizmo 10-05-09 10:39 AM

Re: Misery and Child's Play: 9/15/09

The reason why is because the disc was 'ready' when MGM didn't get a hoot about Special Features on a Blu-ray. The cost to go back, re-do a menu etc. would be to high. At this point, I just come to accept it and would rather pay $15 for a BD + DVD Special Features disc vs $30 and no Special Features.
