Wal-mart is the only store that I have been into that has shrunk space for movies.
Our Target stores have remained the same but they are never stocked. Best Buy expanded their selection here -- it used to just be the first aisle, now it's the first two aisles (4 shelves) and they still offer the greatest number of releases here. Wal-mart here has stayed the same in some stores and greatly expanded in others. One expanded its selection but I have yet to see it fully stocked, the other expanded its selection and is fully stocked, and a new one opened with the display shown at the beginning of the thread, which has a moderate number of titles in an eye catching display. Borders used to carry every single titles, not sure that they still do, charging MSRP on a Blu-ray is killer (tho those 40% coupons help a lot).

Wish we had Frys

My store expanded their player section and re-arranged the movies. Used to be 3 locked cases, now there are 2, with an extra player section added. But the movies in the 3rd case are now on an end cap with various $15 movies. I'm glad to see they did expand the players, but it would have been nice to see more movies. It's only the end of May. I think we'll see more floor changes before Christmas rolls around. Every Walmart can get rid of CD space.

I'm surprised stores still stock so many CDs. Best Buy devotes just as much space to CDs as they do DVD/Blu-ray and Video games combined. I see far more people browsing through DVDs than CDs nowadays.

Remeber Walmart was the last major B&M retailer to carru VHS. If there is enough demand that they can make a profit they will carry it.

I think Best Buy gets a much better cost on CDs than DVDs.

I agree with you both. It always amazes me how huge their CD selection is compared to DVD/BD and video games.

Re: Wal-Mart to Expand Blu-ray Players and Movies

Stopped in today and noticed there was a new revamp of their entire setup. At my store, they had always locked up the BD movies, due to high shrinkage. Apparently, it has dropped enough to allow them to put the movies back out in the open. They have really nice big stand in the middle of the movie aisles with BDs on all 4 sides. They're $10, $15, and $20, with a good mix of catalog titles. I don't know how long it'll last before the scumbag losers who steal and cause them to switch back to locked cases, but for now, I'll be back buying again at Walmart.

I love the title of this thread

Wal-Mart to Expand Blu-ray Players and Movies

When in fact it seems like they are doing more shrinking rather than expanding.

Of course the thread started almost 1 year ago.

If Walmart had good prices across the board, then I'd be a little concerned with their decision to shrink their inventory. But, as with all other places online and B&Ms, their sale prices dictate where I buy.

The Wal-marts I've been to have been expanding. There's one next to where I work that we all call the ghetto Wal-mart (most of their media inventory is usually taken up by latino language music) and they have a whole new setup that really expands the blu-ray section. It sounds very much like what Mr. Cinema is talking about below...

Glad to hear there are some locations doing it. The 3 in my town are all shrinking into almost nothing....

Mine as well. 2 Super Centers and 1 regular Wal Marts have been slowly reducing the Blu-rays.

Still saving a few pennies wont be enough to get me to shop at that horrible corporation.
Hopefully they won't, since more people are hovering at those "trashpiles" than at anything else at every Wal-Mart I've been too.

Re: Wal-Mart to Expand Blu-ray Players and Movies

I was pleasantly surprised to see an expanded blu ray set up in my local Wal-Mart this morning. They had put in a center island with $10, $15, and $20 sections on different sides. They also had other sections of movies. This is a newer store in a pretty affluent area so that may be a factor.
