Re: Punch-Drunk Love
With the exception of "50 First Dates" and "Punch Drunk Love," I'm not exactly an Adam Sandler fan. However, this film really engaged me. Just about every one of Paul Thomas Anderson's films deserve repeated viewings so that you can pick up the nuances in his storytelling and direction. When a friend and I walked out of the theater after viewing "Magnolia," many years ago, we both turned our noses up. But then we talked about it in the car, over dinner, on the phone and then the next day at work... It gets better after each viewing. The film "Punch Drunk Love" had the same effect. It was a slow burn into my psyche—like "Magnolia," it is among my favorite PTA films. The next film in Mr. Anderson's film repertoire needing the Criterion treatment is "Hard Eight," aka "Sydney." It's one of those films you can treat your friends to viewing and they'll be floored that the film escaped their attention over the years. It is an under-appreciated gem.

I would really love a complete Paul Thomas Anderson collection on Blu-Ray, even if it means I have to own Inherent Vice...

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
I've enjoyed PTA's films, -I always see them in the theater, -but they seem to get longer and more impenetrable with each and every film. "The Master" has some moments, but I found it a chore, and "Vice" was just awful to my mind. I must admit I've felt no desire to revisit those films. At least part of the problem is my general dislike of Joaquin Phoenix (it's not that he isn't talented, -I just don't like to watch him).

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
I've never seen this but have always wanted to. I might blind buy the Criterion edition at some point.

Awesome. :)

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
I remember seeing this in the theaters and thinking it was absolutely terrible when it was over. Haven't seen it since. I guess I should check it out again to see if it has improved at all with age.

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
The Master is probably his best film and Inherent Vice is great. Love all of PTA's films except for Magnolia. All my opinion of course.

I wanted to like The Master so much, but it just frustrated me to no end.

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
I've only seen Inherent Vice once. I liked it. I probably would have liked it a whole lot more if trying to decifer the unfolding of the plot didn't just about cause me a brain aneurysm.

I do love Emily Watson though, and think she makes up for a lot of the film's shortcomings. |
Re: Punch-Drunk Love
Paul Thomas Anderson is my most favorite director of all time. I've watched There Will Be Blood over a hundred times; maybe Boogie Nights is up there, too.
I do understand some complaints about Magnolia and The Master. The former is too long, even Anderson said it himself, and it is sometimes pretentious. However, it's a film with a group of characters that I really empathize with. It was Anderson's first film that I'd seen and it was at a time where I was struggling in school and living in a new country. The Master, I admit, should have had a stronger narrative. I give it a pass because it's so damn well made. Not every film has to have characters explain why they are who they are. Ambiguity doesn't hurt the film for me. I haven't seen Inherent Vice yet, but I simply couldn't finish reading Gravity's Rainbow. I think I made it up to about 80 or so pages before I returned it. I read Inherent Vice wasn't easy to decipher, either. Looking forward to the next Criterion sale to buy Punch-Drunk Love! |
Re: Punch-Drunk Love
^You've watched There Will Be Blood an average of once a month for the last 9 years?! I call bullshit.

I rented it when it first hit DVD and remember thinking it was just alright. I don't know if people go crazy for it because they think it's a great movie or just because it isn't the usual complete pile of shit that Sandler usually squirts out.

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
It's easily my least favorite PTA film, and I've only seen it once when it was in theaters. I did buy the DVD but I actually never watched that. I'll probably still buy the BD and maybe this time I'll actually sit down and give it another try.

Re: Punch-Drunk Love
My favorite PTA film, and the only Sandler movie I like. I'm very excited that Criterion is releasing this.
