The HDMI transmitter in the PS3 isn't capable of outputting 120 Hz. It won't even do native bitstream transmission for the HD audio codecs.

Well that sucks. I was aware of it not being able to do native bitstream as I have it output PCM to my Onkyo 705. BTW can current receivers (like my aformentioned Onkyo) handle a 120Hz signal or will I have to upgrade that as well?

It's very doubtful that the receiver would handle 120 Hz either.

So, yes, 3-D will require a whole lot of new hardware throughout the video chain.

So if I have to update my player, reciever, and TV, cables and so on. I guess I feel alot more comfortable with going ahead and getting my new TV now. I probably won't jump on the bandwagon right away. I'll have to take my time updating one thing at a time until I can finally enjoy Real3D in my home.

I'm in the same boat, Teremei. My current TV is only a couple of years old so I was planning on saving up and upgrading later anyway. I guess now it'll be much later as my receiver is even newer than my TV. It's not too bad since I wasn't going to spend my money on first generation 3D gear anyway. I want them to iron out a good deal of the kinks first before I get into 3DTV.

I'm not going to worry about it. I'll probably end up getting it when it's included as a standard feature, and I upgrade for other reasons. There just isn't that much 3D material I'd be interested in.

I suspect they'll tinker with the idea in a couple years, put out something that kind of works, but I don't think it'll really work till the next format (whether a holographic disc or something else).

That said, I really don't understand this phenomenon. As I understand it, 3D versions of movies are drained of the light and color of the 2D versions (per Roger Ebert). Just seems like a gimmick to get people in theatres. I'm looking forward to seeing Avatar because Cameron's an interesting film artist, but on the whole I think the 3D thing is a fad that will pass. Imagine watching The Godfather in 3D... ridiculous.

That's only true of movies using anaglyph 3-D (the type with red and blue glasses). Anaglyph is rarely used in theaters. Both Digital 3-D and IMAX 3-D are bright and colorful.
