I doubt Universal purposefully altered the color timing. I imagine this is just a goof by technicians who didn't know better.

Apparently Spike's done a few Q+As since the BD/DVD came out and no word on this complaint getting back to him, yet.

Glad I kept my Criterion DVD, there is no way I will buy the Blu-ray unless it is corrected.

A true film fan wouldn't whine like a 6 year old because they don't like the way the TINT of a movie looks. I have both the Criterion and Blu Ray and what I care about is the movie itself. It's not like the movie is in black and white on the Blu Ray. It's ridiculous that you won't buy a movie that you supposedly love because it's not HOT enough. That's NOT a true movie fan.

Don't you want what the original movie looked and sounded like? To me a true film fan wants to see what the director/DP initially made the film as. Imagine the Matrix with no green tint to it when outside of the real world. Would you still buy the DVD/BD?

Perhaps not the best example you could have gone with. Current video editions of The Matrix are tinted a much darker shade of green than the original theatrical release. The movie had less of a green tint in theaters. The Wachowski's changed the color scheme after-the-fact to make it look more like the sequels.

But still, it was always supposed to be greenish. Just not as much as it is now.

Just wondering what the general consensus is on the board. Do you think Mookie did the right thing? No one I've ever talked to seems to think so.

Mookie did what he believed was the right thing in the moment that he did it. Upon reflection, that certainty became clouded.

The beauty and richness of the film is that there may in fact never be a "right thing". Everyone believes that they're doing the right thing when they do it. But they obviously can't all be right.

I was hoping the bump was for Criterion speculation. So far they've released Dazed & Confused, Fear & Loathing and have Traffic on the way. Hopefully, they'll release it on Blu soon.

I think the odds are pretty non-existent. All of the others have been catalog re-issues, reflecting years-old, mostly barebones DVDs. In this case, Universal spent their own money doing a supervised transfer, assembling Lee and the cast for a screening, recording a new commentary, etc., It was even an "anniversary" SE and had a corresponding DVD, not to mention their disc includes all of Criterion's original extras save for one.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09

I'm still rather conflicted with that revelation. On the one hand, it's one less thing I can take Universal to task for concerning their catalog titles. Furthermore, both he and Lee approved the timing, so they don't have an issue with the change. However, it's still a retroactive change, which I'm not the biggest fan of. Not to mention that it makes it even less likely we'll see an HD version released with the correct timing.

I think we, the fans, worry more about things like framing and color timing than the filmmakers do.

It certainly seems that way.
