I am not seeing much difference between Blueray discs and DVDs
I am relatively new to blueray and to be honest I am not seeing much difference between Blueray discs and DVDs Im obviously running them through the same player (S350) but Im just not seeing this huge difference in PQ, the only difference I see is the price that I am buying them for is relatively higher than DVD.

What kind of cable are you using? HDMI?
Do you have a TV with 1080p resolution?
Did you set the Sony's reolution to auto or 1080p?

Using gold plated HDMI
Samsung 46A656 set to 1080p 24 and manual settings
DVD is set to 1080p

Apologies if it upset you in any way

What movies have you tried? There are a bunch of Blu-ray's that don't look much different from their DVD counterparts, but there are also ones that look far better.

Fumanstan:
I dont have a huge collection at the mo but the ones I have:
Transformers
300 (best picture I have seen)
Ironman
Departed
Cloverfield
SpeedRacer
Hancock
Casino Royale
Batman Begins
Dumb and Dumber
Pineapple Express
Mamma Mia
I just feel that the DVDs I have that are upscaled to 1080p are just as good a picture, I know Im not comparing them 1 to 1 as I dont have anything on both formats, maybe I should have done this first!

On my 92" screen, Blu-ray's obviously look better -- but, and there is a big but (no pun intended) -- a poor Blu-ray won't look much better than a DVD.
I'll probably watch 70% Blu-ray in the coming years, but I definitely can understand people who are underwhelmed by this so-called revolutionary technology. Those who expect the same leap between DVD and Blu-ray as the leap between VHS and DVD will be disappointed.
Ninhydrin:
If you have both the DVD and Blu-ray version of a movie, try switching between them, and I'm sure you'll see a difference in PQ. Good luck.

re: I am not seeing much difference between Blueray discs and DVDs
I've watched 10 or so Blu-rays since we got the player last month. The least of them look marginally better than upconverted DVDs, but the best I've seen (The Dark Knight, for example) are breathtaking. (It's possible that your TV isn't calibrated as well as it could be.)

Judging by what other posters are saying, I guess it isn't just you. As for me, I see a big difference and I feel it's a bigger jump than VHS to DVD. Nice leap in sound quality too.

There must be something wrong with the settings. With the setup you have, you should see a noticeable difference and improvement from DVD to BD. What films are you watching?

Another one of these threads already? Can't we sticky a Blu-Ray isn't much better than dvd thread so that these things can go there? I understand that some people don't see "much improvement" in the video quality and it usually comes down to not having the right settings or too high of expectations for what Blu-Ray is supposed to be.

Some people see a big difference, some don't. Personally, I notice the difference in sound much more than the difference in PQ. I just wish people would stop assuming that "there's something wrong with your eyes or your settings or your equipment" when this alleged BIG difference isn't noticed...

It's not "alleged". It's there. I have no doubt that some may not notice it, or just don't know what they're looking for, but to say it's "alleged" is borderline retarded.

I think as others have mentioned, that the big difference comes when you watch a DVD and then the Blu-ray after. When I got Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-ray I popped in the old DVD I had and the difference was remarkable. It was like I didn't realize the DVD looked that bad until I saw how great it was on Blu-ray.

There are some BDs that aren't much better in PQ that an upscaled DVD. However, there is a good difference in audio on most all BDs. I've noticed a huge difference in some Bds PQ and it was enough that now when I watch a SD I noticed the flaws in the PQ.
