My pre-order is still at 19.95. I don't know if Amazon screwed up the listing or not, but I'll take it. I would have paid the $30 though - this is an essential film IMO.

Does it show for the new version or did the UPC change? Irked I didn't get in on the cheaper price. If only I knew...

.The way I see it, this makes me even with them for dropping Amadeus $12 in a week.

Didn't you stop pre-orders from Amazon? I learned my lesson long ago. I wait a whole week before I think about ordering a title that came out to see if the price drops. Saved me some coin in the past few months.

I'm pretty sure he did destroy that pie fight footage. He burned all the extra scenes from '2001', and he demanded that Criterion recall copies of their 'Dr. Strangelove' laserdisc that included an early copy of the script (which had bookend scenes of aliens visiting the Earth after our nuclear apocalypse). Kubrick did not believe in letting the public see behind the scenes of his movies.

At least part of the pie fight ending survived and the British Film Institute had or has a copy in their collection. Christopher Frayling viewed it in the course of research for his book on Ken Adam and it was even publicly screened at the National Film Theatre in 1999 (apparently without the Kubrick estate's knowledge or permission).
Also, one of Kubrick's longtime assistants disputes that Kubrick would've destroyed the extra scenes from 2001. AFAIK they haven't turned up yet -- Robert Harris went looking in the early '90s and more or less threw in the towel, suspecting Kubrick might've been keeping them in his garage -- but that's no surprise if you've seen Stanley Kubrick's Boxes.

Love this film but don't need to own it at the street price. I'll Netflix it on Blu-Ray.
Eventually it will be a bargain.

The 45th Anniversary release will feature a 32-page booklet included in a deluxe Blu-ray book package.

I still won't be able to justify a purchase given what will be the retail price on street

One of my all-time favorites, so I'll be getting it on day 1. I am also glad to see Sony using the digibook packaging. For certain releases, I think it's a good idea.

I wonder if some of the other Sony classics, such as Taxi Driver, LOA, and Bridge on the River Kwai, will get the digibook treatment....when they're released. I guess this means WB was seeing strong sales from those, otherwise I'm not sure why Sony would jump on the bandwagon.

The Digibooks do carry a $5 premium on the MSRP (compared to other catalog titles from Warner) so maybe its a way to justify a higher price tag? I can't imagine the materials required to make a Digibook would cost the studios $5 so they could be seeing a few dollars more profit going this route.

As of today (May 10), this is available for pre-order for $22.39 at DVD Empire, with a list price showing at $28.95. Does anybody have any idea what the official MSRP is at this point?

Might want to pre-order there. Amazon's price is $26.99, based on a $38.99 list. Bestbuy.com is selling it for $29.99 as well. I just pre-ordered from Empire.
