Re: Taxi Driver - 4/5/11

If you're in Berlin next month:

In February, the Berlin Film Festival will screen a 4K digital restoration of Martin Scorsese's cult film Taxi Driver. Writer and director Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplay for the movie, will present the restored version at the world premiere in Berlin together with Grover Crisp, senior VP for restoration and mastering of Sony Pictures. A Blu-ray release has not been formally announced yet, although a German release is slated for April.

During restoration, the original 35mm negative was scanned at 4K resolution. Grover Crisp managed all facets of the digital restoration of this Columbia Pictures release. A Barco projector will make it possible to show the film in 4K quality.
This should look phenomenal. I'm tempted to just pre-order it now. The way DD has been with their last few sales, it might not be worth waiting until July.

I have this recorded on my DVR. I believe it was HDNet that aired it last week. I watched part of it last night and it looked pretty good, but I'll happily replace it with the new BD once it arrives. Are we certain this will be a digibook? The list price is only $24.95. That seems low for that kind of release. I believe the last real digibook from Sony was Easy Rider, which came out in October 2009.

so no digibook then?

Re: Taxi Driver - 4/5/11

I doubt it. I don't think Sony has released a digibook in over a year and with a list price of only $24.99, chances are slim.

At that price, everyone should be pre-ordering this.

I just pre-ordered it about 10 days ago and the price was $14 or $15.99? Will i get a refund on the difference once the blu-ray is released?

No they'll automatically lower the price on your order. You're guaranteed the lowest price until the end of street date and the only time they actually refund you is if it ships early, like if they charge you $12 when they ship something out the Friday before street date and then on Tuesday it drops down to $10, they'll refund you the $2.

Keep an eye on your order in the next day or two, you'll see. That's why there's never any reason to NOT preorder from amazon.com, especially with their easy cancelations process.

Per Blu-ray.com, Sony licensed the Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader commentary from the old Criterion Collection Laser Disc! Very exciting news.

The complete specs:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced Taxi Driver for Blu-ray release on April 5, in a 35th Anniversary edition. This gritty urban drama, written by Paul Schrader, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as a man driven to violence by loneliness and desperation, won the 1976 Palme d'Or at Cannes and was nominated to four Academy Awards. In a welcome initiative, SPHE has licensed the use of the original Scorsese/Schrader audio commentary previously only available on the Laserdisc.

As previously reported (see Blu-ray.com, January 27), the film has received a 4K digital restoration from the original negative, which will be presented and screened at the Berlin Film Festival this week.

Special features include:

* Commentaries:
o Director Martin Scorsese and writer Paul Schrader (recorded in 1986 by The Criterion Collection)
o Paul Schrader
o Professor Robert Kolker
* Interactive Script to Screen
* Martin Scorsese on Taxi Driver
* God's Lonely Man
* Producing Taxi Driver
* Influence and Appreciation: A Martin Scorsese Tribute
* Taxi Driver Stories
* Making Taxi Driver
* Travis' New York
* Travis' New York Locations
* Storyboard to Film Comparisons with Martin Scorsese
* Animated Photo Galleries
* movieIQ

No isolated score track, but nice to see the Laserdisc commentary ported.

$25 list for a high-definition transfer of Taxi Driver with the LD commentary and a slew of other goodies. Pretty fantastic. :up:

That's kinda weird that they credit Criterion for the laserdisc on the back. Not that it isn't deserved or appropriate, I just don't think it was done on other cases where their supplements wound up on non-Criterion discs. I wonder if Criterion insisted on that as part of the licensing agreement.
