What's Up with Canada Getting Horror BDs We Don't Get?

Canada gets all these BDs that we don't get, mostly horror, just recently found out that Canada got Freddy vs. Jason and Seed of Chucky and in the past they have gotten A Nightmare on Elm Street, From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City.

I know they will work on the BD players here (I just ordered Freddy vs. Jason for $18 from Amazon.ca) but it's just the principal of the thing.

I want everything you just mentioned (except for Seed of Chucky and maybe not Sin City which isn't even horror anyway)! It is surprising none of those have been released in the US yet.

Just checked out FvJ, From Dusk and Sin City

All 3 are barebones. Some don't even have pop-up menus. Sounds like a DVD transfer pretending to be a BD.

I'll wait for a REAL U.S. release.

Recently received FDTD and Sin City from Amazon.CA

Are there any other Canadian Blu-Ray releases worth noting?

They are Canadian exclusive and barebones for a reason. As for the transfers, FvJ looks really good as does Dusk.

Yep. I'll take a barebones now, thanks. Come to think of it, I might as well watch Sin City this morning.

Alliance is just taking advantage of getting some BR sales before their distribution/licensing deals expire.

Miramax titles are now handled by Lionsgate (Maple Pictures in Canada)
New Line titles are now handled by Warner (although Warner Canada has allowed Alliance to keep going with distribution until later 2009 I think)

Sin City has fantastic picture and audio quality. Also, for those who are unaware, although the box says "Dolby Digital 5.1" for the sound, it actually has a lossless track (can't remember if it's TrueHD or DTS-HD-MA... but one of those is definitely on there).

Uhm, yeah... Did you actually watch them, or are you pulling that statement out of your ass? Was Dusk Til Dawn taken from the non-anamorphic DVD release?

You want to wait, that's fine, but to put it so dismissively makes you look bad.

I read that in a review that's why I caved in and bought it. I figured it's a newer movie so it might look pretty good, heard the audio quality is pretty good too. I hope they release Scream, I'd love to see that on BD.

Someone on another board mentioned FDTD looks better than any previous version. I'm going to wait and see how the eventual U.S. release stacks up and buy the better transfer.

Every other version has been on DVD...so yeah, the BD would look better even if its a crappy release. But its not, and if it can still be had for $15 you should get it.

I bought the Black Christmas (1974) BD and it actually looked worse than the DVD!

I just watched Freddy vs. Jason and it looked very good. All of the Alliance releases are barebones, so if extras are what you want, you're out of luck. If you just want a nice HD version of the movie itself, though, they're quite good. Also, they're not that expensive to import right now with the current exchange rate.

Considering I own that Blu-ray too, I can safely say you're nuts. Yes, the movie isn't Hellboy 2, but you shouldn't expect it to be. It looks perfectly fine for that film. And um, oh yeah, I own the DVD too.

I swear it looked terrible. I know it's not gonna look very good, but I thought the DVD looked better (or at least the same) and the 5.1 audio track wasn't synched up correctly. I ended up selling the BD and just kept my DVD.

Nope, haven't seen them, but from reading about them they sound pretty lame. I love Blu-ray, but I don't care for barebones. Odd that I'm catching flak when not too long ago if an SD were released barebones many would be up in arms bitching.

I'll stick with my Sin City SD boxset.

Where did you read about them sounding "lame"? I've heard nothing but praise for them, and the 3 that I own look and sound fantastic. Barebones means nothing to me considering I already own the DVDs that have the extras. Plus, I haven't watched them in forever and probably wouldn't watch them again anyway.

Yep, you're nuts Every title on BD.HD (even Gangs of NY and Traffic) have looked better on their respective format...even if its just slightly. IIRC, Adam had an issue with the audio as well with that title on BD.

This.

And "DVD transfer pretending to be a BD" is completely wrong. I have the BDs of SIN CITY and FROM DUSK TIL DAWN and they blow away the standard DVDs. As for barebones? I don't care, I still have the extras on my standard DVDs (that I probably couldn't sell for much anyway). If these extras do end up being ported over to the eventual US BD releases, I strongly suspect they would be in standard def anyway, so I shouldn't be missing much.
