Upconverting dvd players vs Upconverting Blu-ray players

So i keep seeing an advertisement on this site for the Toshiba XD-E500 Upconverting 1080p Extended Detail DVD Player

Since i already own a ps3, Blu Ray player, a combo player, and an hd-dvd player is there any point in owning a upconverting dvd player? Does it do a better job than the hd players would?

btw the toshiba hd-dvd is an A30

blu ray is an lg BD300

and combo is an lg bh200

Thanks in advance

And no, buying yet ANOTHER player would be pointless. The PS3 or a good BD player is fine.

Re: Upconverting dvd players vs Upconverting Blu-ray players

i had a nice phillips upconvertor hooked up to my Sharp Aqous 32" 1080i and it did the trick perfectly.

but when i upgraded to a 42" phillips 1080p i decided to get a ps3 player ... and hands down the ps3 is better ...

in your situation there would be no point to getting another upconverter ... because honestly you have 3 upconvertors ... or if you wanna be mean to the early HD buyers ... your HD DVD player servs as an upconvertor ...

Why don't we look at what actually matters. What TV?

I'm trying to figure out why you have an LG Blu-ray player hooked up if you have the much-superior PS3, and I'm also wondering why you'd have the LG combo player if you have the PS3 and the much-superior Toshiba HD DVD player.

The LG combo player is the best upconverter of that group. It has the Qdeo chip which is a very high quality converter. The PS3 does a good job, but when I have compared them I prefer the job the BH200 does. There is absolutely no reason to buy an additional player for DVDs. You BH200 will compete fine with Toshiba's new upconverting players.

In addition, I've heard that it's mostly just adding edge enhancement, which many of us would consider a bad thing. I looked at the color differences. Well, what if the color is supposed to look like that? Making it more saturated than it's supposed to be is not an improvement in my book.

Sorry, but that is totally wrong.

mhg83,
If you are really looking for the best upconversion, for $800 you can get a DVDO Edge, and it WILL be better than all of those. Considering what you've spent in all those players, it isn't that far out. Although with a 47" TV, I'm not sure it would be worth it. You are the one with them hooked up, have you compared them? I'm guessing the differences would be minor and not something that would ever affect your viewing.

I think the point he was trying to make is that most players will not upconvert DVDs over anything but HDMI.

Re: Upconverting dvd players vs Upconverting Blu-ray players

I thought saying 'get the cheapest' meant upconverters & de-interlacers are all the same. I know you would disagree with that, too. But I don't know what he meant for sure.

That should have included de-interlacers. Posting mobile, sorry.

Re: Upconverting dvd players vs Upconverting Blu-ray players

I use my PS3 for Blu-ray only, and I have a Toshiba HD-A20 to play my upconverted DVD's until Oppo eventually comes out with their Blu-ray player. Don't really need much more than that. And for anyone who wonders about the PS3's capability for upconverting, it didn't impress me in the least.
