Put off buying these shows for blu-ray?

There are certain shows that I am holding off buying on DVD because there is a question of if it will be put out on Blu-Ray is something I would rather have. It is mainly shows that have a ton of season sets and I am looking to either get the complete series in a set or wait for the blu-ray announcement.
Some shows I am debating and putting off hold right now is:

The Simpsons - They have what 10 seasons out now and I would love it on blu-ray but don't want to buy all 10 seasons to find out they will be releasing it on blu-ray? Buy or Hold Off?

Friends - I am eager to buy the Complete Series set but I heard a rumor that Friends might be coming to blu-ray? Buy or Hold Off?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - I want to get the Chosen Collection but if they release it into Blu-Ray it would be great. If the blu-ray can improve some of the darker scenes that would be great. Buy or Hold Off

Angel - The Complete Collection Same reason if they can improve the dark scenes by blu-ray that would be great? Buy or Hold Off

Smallville - Well Season 6 and 7 get released in blu-ray? What about 1 - 5? Should I buy the DVDs for 1 - 5 or wait for blu-ray?

Don't count on it.

Rumored

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - I want to get the Chosen Collection but if they release it into Blu-Ray it would be great. If the blu-ray can improve some of the darker scenes that would be great. Buy or Hold Off

We have debated this....it aired 4:3 for all 7 seasons (1 episode exception) in America yet S4-7 are available in Widescreen overseas...Joss prefers 4:3, but 16:9 works well. After the success of Firefly on BD I have a feeling we may see a season or two to test the waters.

Angel - The Complete Collection Same reason if they can improve the dark scenes by blu-ray that would be great? Buy or Hold Off

S2-5 aired in Widescreen...so its possible. I'd count on Buffy first though.

Smallville - Well Season 6 and 7 get released in blu-ray? What about 1 - 5? Should I buy the DVDs for 1 - 5 or wait for blu-ray?

Warner has no plans to release 1-5 on BD until the show ends its run. Even then, its no guarantee, but they may do a Complete set.

IMO, I doubt they could improve the image quality of The Simpsons enough to justify the increased price.

What difference does it make if something is in widescreen or not?

And I agree, The Simpsons wouldn't warrant the upgrade probably for the earlier seasons, but it definitely would look great in HD for later seasons.

It makes no difference to me personally. I'd rather have the show in its OAR...but 4:3 and Blu-ray do not seem to gel well with consumers. They don't go out and buy HDTVs and shiny new Blu-ray players to have black bars on the sides of their screens. We are more likely to get older shows that had Widescreen available rather then full screen since the wide screen "fills up their TV". (Yet, I still shake my head at Warner with Justice League S1 yet applaud Lionsgate for Weeds S1)

I think I would only put off buying shows that were originally broadcast in HD. Shows like Dexter or Lost for example.

That's pretty much the way I look at it.

Just curious - but does anyone know if Alias was orignally in HD? All their season sets were anamorphic, just not sure is a BD high def transfer would benefit.

If it was shot on 35mm film, a high-def transfer will definitely benefit it. Just look at the first season of the original "Star Trek."

The only question is, was it edited in high-def? If not, it would mean having to retransfer all the film to video in HD, then re-editing it. That's expensive and time-consuming, and is likely going to be the holdup for a lot of older shows.

Yes....it was produced in HD from the start.....I still remember seeing HD screen caps from the first couple seasons that were posted online, damn Ben Affleck is one lucky man!

Alias would be a must on Blu-ray. They should release a complete series set of it on BD. I don't like the idea of picking them up again individually but a complete set would be awesome. That was such an incredible series. And yeah, Ben Affleck is really lucky.

I agree with that sentiment:

Complete Series box of Alias on Blu-ray = A Must Own

Individual season releases = PASS.

Would love to see Deadwood, Rome and Six Feet Under on Blu Ray. Have only heard rumours but nothing definitive.

I'm holding off on purchasing Deadwood, but I don't know how much longer I can wait. It is one of my favorite shows ever, and HBO hasn't shown that it cares about a BD release at all.
