Re: Canadian Blu-ray Releases - Complete List and Discussion

Thanks for all the work on here Gizmo. I happily signed for Trainspotting at my door yesterday and expect to give it a spin pretty soon. I have the 2 disc SE for comparison purposes and I'll report back.

Has anyone heard if Copland will be the extended cut?

I believe Warner gave Alliance Films rights to the New Line catalogue until November 2009? (if I recall).
It was November or December. You should see a big influx in Q4 of Alliance BD titles. Hoping for some real gems since Warner is dragging their feet on nearly anything Newline.

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Releases - Complete List and Discussion

A couple of sites are showing a June 2nd release for Fanboys. Since Weinsten Company hasn't announced one for the US, that would be a Canadian exclusive. I hope it actually comes out, unlike the Alliance Blindness BD that seems to have been canceled when the US BD was canceled.

You might want to update that Rounders is 1080p and Running Scared is 1080i (and wrong aspect ratio I think). Thanks for keeping this list up.

Know it's a little late for the response (apologies), but I had both the Sony and Alliance discs handy for comparison -- and the Alliance disc boots up with the Sony logo at the start.

Are you positive (i.e. checked the i/p while the film was playing)? Alliance is known to put the wrong information on the back of the case.

Rounders is 1080p per my PS3, and looks very good.

The Canadian exclusives might be ending in the next few months (I heard October/November) so we may see a bigger push shortly.

I given both Trainspotting and Cold Mountain a spin and both are satisfactory to my eyes (& ears) and definite upgrades over their sd counterparts.

Also Kill Shot (from Weinstein) is May 26th. Expect to get some Weinstein titles now from Canada as they have seemingly dropped Blu-ray.

INETVIDEO has Cop Land for $15.99 and they list it as the 116 min extended cut (Woohoo!). Also a free shipping deal right now. I just hope the picture quality is up to par. The UK release got brutal reviews.

Hmmm. Not sure if that's proof. It was licensed from Sony.

Don't trust anything on the cover art for Canadian releases. Its been proven wrong many times (1080p, Special Features etc). I always wait until someone has a copy and can confirm.

Maybe the PCM track and the buzzing, puny bitrate (edit to add: hovering around 20-22 mbps when pushed) MPEG-2 transfer are enough of a follow-up indication?

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Releases - Complete List and Discussion

Looks like bad news for the Blade BD coming this Tuesday, as it's apparently going the Seven route with a 1.78:1 transfer from the OAR of 2.35:1. Back cover scan and owner testimonials over at blu-ray.com. Not sure if it's open matte like Seven was, but I bought that out of sheer curiosity and couldn't make it past the first 15 minutes as the framing looked so jarring.

Copland is also apparently 1.78:1 from 1.85:1.

Is it also 1080i?

Edit: That back cover scan on the Blu-ray.com thread shows 1080p, but that could still be a misprint I suppose. It's also looking like the film was cropped to the new aspect ratio (i.e., no open matte). So I guess no sale for me.

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Releases - Complete List and Discussion

Yeah, and no extras as is pretty much the case with almost all the Alliance catalog titles. I'll still probably pick up Copland, as it looks to be the Director's Cut.

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Releases - Complete List and Discussion

Updated OP with info on Blade, Killshot and Outlander.

Artwork on some of the other 6/2 releases are floating around but I won't update the OP until the discs arrive since Alliance has been wrong many, many times.
