LGs suck?
As mentioned in a previous thread, I had bought my parents an hdtv. It's an LG 47 inch:
http://www.amazon.com/LG-47LG50-47-I...0264676&sr=8-2
So my dad said that the lg brand sucks. That is not what i had thought of them. I've read many positive reviews on the TV's and they seem like the best off brand TV. Even the amazon link has overall positive reviews. Was my dad right in his statement that LG sucks? Has anyone on here ever owned an LG television?
What do you guys think of LG?

Ok, so why would your daddy know more about LG products than you would. Has he ever owned an LG LCD TV? Or did he just get this amazing info from the 17-year old professional associate at Best Buy who believes in Sony Only.
LG is a good brand. Not everything they produce is great as they have a dynamic product assortment, but overall, I'd recommend them.

Let me get this straight. You go all out and buy your parents a freakin' HDTV for the holidays...and they bitch about the brand? Take it back and give 'em this...

I have an LG 32LG30 as the spare TV, and it's fine. It does have a bit of black crush, but the viewing angle is excellent and the picture is quite sharp.
The really nice thing about the LG you bought them is that it has a USB port that they can use to play music or view pictures on the TV.
Oh, another thing, that Amazon price is HORRIBLE. That model is $1000 in Canada!

As one of the few TV manufacturer who built their own LCD panel (LG is cooperating with Phillips on this), it is generally accepted that LG is better than most.
Well of course this doesn't mean that companies who doesn't make their own LCD panel is a bad thing, but (iirc) sometimes LCD panel manufacturer does keep their best panel copy for themselves.
So yeah. Your parents should be fine with an LG.

I wouldn't mind having on of these 60" LG Plasmas. Not quite as good black levels as Kuro but pretty impressive from what I hear for about half the price of a Kuro. http://www.amazon.com/LG-60PG60-60-I...294687&sr=8-1#

I've got the LG 47" I think its great for the money. However, I did have to take one back because there was a vibration in one of the speakers, the picture quality is great and its got lots of inputs and 120 hz.

At least LG sounds better than their original name Goldstar.

You know that LG stands for Lucky Goldstar? All kidding aside, your father's "opinion" sounds like someone's else's bad experience was foisted upon him, or that he's ignorant (of the facts). What brands does he claim are better?

The only Korean company that has been a disaster for me is Samsung. Every Samsung thing I have owned from a DVD player to a refrigerator has been complete junk that has broken right after the warranty ended. No problems so far with LG.

Back when they were called Goldstar (twenty years ago?) they were one of those off-brands that you'd see on store shelves. Like, you'd be shopping for a new microwave at Target, and they the Goldstar models that would cost about half as much as the name brands.
Maybe the company is different now and they're competing with the big guys and their reputation is still following them; don't think I've ever owned anything by LG or Goldstar, so I can't say either way.

I don't know about their TVs, but I purchased a DVD recorder from them a few years ago. The thing cost me about $300. I used it twice and it broke. I had to pay $65 to get it fixed because the labor warranty was only 90 days or something like that. They sent it back not working at all. I had to send it back, again, and they finally fixed it. I used it maybe one or two more times and it broke again. But this time they wouldn't fix it because the warranty was void (I had it over 6 months). All this for just a broken band that turns the gears to open the DVD tray (as I eventually figured out when I opened it up). From that point on I swore off LG. My uncle has an LG TV, but I don't know how good it is. He hasn't had any trouble out of it so far, but he doesn't know much about them. He keeps the TV with the picture stretched and he doesn't even have any HD sources going to it. Maybe if you buy an extended warranty it might be OK. Then again, I could have just had one bad piece of equipment in all their products.

Hmm, I had no idea that LG used to be Goldstar. I remember having a Goldstar TV probably more than 20 years ago. We bought it to hook up our Apple IIc so that we could have a color monitor (and I could have a TV when it was not in use). I remember it had a very strange overall setup. BUT I also think that my parents still use it today, so obviously it wasn't a total piece of junk.

LG makes good cellphones, so they do make some quality products.

Netflix, LG in HDTV venture
The home movie service to offer instantly streamed movies on new set.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- LG Electronics said Monday it will market a high-definition television set that will instantly stream movies from the video rental service Netflix.
The two companies said the new set will stream HD movies and television shows directly from Netflix without an external device.
The new model will be on display this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
LG (LGEIY) said the new HDTVs will rely on broadband connections and allow members to build their selections through the Netflix (NFLX) Web site.
Shares of Netflix rose 2% in early Monday trading.

Re: LGs suck?
I have not seen one single LG display that left me saying wow that's a great HDTV, never! I find most LG product not only look cheap but just do not measure up to other brands. For starters I really hated LG before they changed there name from Goldstar. I never said to myself wow I would love to own a Goldstar. Then to make everyone forget who they where they changed there name to Lucky Goldstar and now we know them as LG. There are a number of really good displays available but I do not consider LG to be one of them. There is no way I would ever place a LG display in my home theater or an LG monitor on my computer. I have a Sony 50" HDTV for my HT and a Samsung for my PC. If I was to buy a newer 3D display this year I might buy a Mitsubishi or Samsung. But I do not care for the color and picture depth and IMHO Visio is a better deal than LG, you spend Sony prices and you end up with a Poleroid.
