Gamera: The Giant Monster (1965)
From this set:
Thumbs up, I think. It's stupid even by the standards of kaiju films, but fun.

First viewing. Enjoyed it quite a bit. I do understand, and wouldn't argue, with the criticisms about the human characters being undercooked. But overall I appreciated the creative choices the film made. The fact they managed to make this a homage to an early apocalyptic Godzilla disaster movie and at the same time a homage to a later era Godzilla wrestling other monsters mash, was sublime.
The only problem I can see is that it doesn't leave any fresh avenues for a sequel.

Another impulse purchase during the Criterion sale that turned out to be a huge win.
Glenn Ford's performance as Jubal Troop, a man whose entire life has been lived under a dark cloud, is just about the best role I've ever seen him in (with the exception of Pa Kent). For once, his perpetually boyish mug fits for a character whose sense of tragic fatalism was cemented in childhood.
From the films various themes and situations, to it's exceptional casting (Borgnine, Steiger, Bronson, French, Farr among others) this has immediately vaulted to the top of my favorite Westerns list alongside movies like The Searchers, Pursued, The Professionals, Will Penny, the Big Country. Reviewers don't seem to rate it all that high even with all the passage of time. But having screened a bunch of classic westerns lately (including Delmar Daves more highly regarded Hanging Tree), this is the one that really 'spoke' to me.
While the disc itself is bare bones (not even a trailer), the presentation by Sony and Crisp via Criterion is as expected, exceptional. Between the gorgeous Big Sky scenery and the exemplary condition of the elements, this is one of the most beautiful looking 50's era films in my collection.

While I don't like the expression "guilty pleasure," I think it's approptiate in the case of that film. It's enjoyable with low enough expectations, but when I watch it, I sometimes hear brain cells dying.
