For the Academy Awards Challenge, tonight we watched Juno. Last night we watched Alice in Wonderland. I enjoy the former, love the latter.

Rules of Attraction - I really like this movie, although the narrative is too disjointed. I know some is intentional, but I felt the relationships weren't established enough to give them any weight during the film's finale. PQ was pretty good, but it could have looked sharper. AQ was nice. All extras from the DVD made it over.

Dinner For Schmucks Found this more annoying than funny. Only watched about half and then gave up. Glad it was a rental and not a purchase
Absolute Power Great movie. Thought the transfer was pretty poor Accepted just picked this up for $2 from half.com |

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
Red - boring as hell, a complete and utter waste of a talented cast.
The American - liked it a lot - even though it had almost no action, I found it far more engaging than Red. |

Not great but enjoyable as hell Last Of The Mohicans Great movie. I did think the transfer was pretty dark but I like the edit didn't have the jumps from the added scenes my last edition had. Old School I saw ol' Blue and it was glorious |
re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
My problem with Red was that even though it was my first (and only) time seeing it, I could see where it was going every single step of it's way. There are movies I've seen numerous times that are less predictable. Add to that lifeless characters, stilted dialog, and all I end up with is a boring movie, regardless of how much "action" they trow at me.
And The American was certainly more of a mood piece, with maybe two quick action scenes, but I felt it was far more tightly wound and therefore, more intense. |

No Country for Old Men (2007):thumbsup:

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
For the Academy Awards Challenge: just finished The Sound of Music. Gorgeous Blu-ray; the landscapes and buildings are just as worthy of attention as any of the songs or people. I'm still not in love with the movie itself, but I suppose I enjoyed it more now than I did when last I saw it nearly 20 years ago.

Entertainment being so subjective is like trying to argue whether vanilla or chocolate ice cream is better. Everyone knows chocolate is far better but you always get the idiot that wants to order vanilla. WTF? ;) In another thread a well-known member who is known for hating an award winning war movie gave Dinner For Schmucks high praise. I couldn't even watch the thing. So that was a WTF moment for me. I would still rather read 100 comments about a movie that are different than mine than get into some of the other inane banter about a release that has nothing to do with the picture itself. For me RED was very predicatable but the cast and action kept it at ***/5. It was the first time I had seen Mary-Louise Parker, or at least noticed her, and had to admit liked how she looked which always helps. There's a nice scene from Weeds of her getting naked and taken from behind which everyone who finds her attractive should check out. |

The American. Better than I thought it was going to be simply because I had no expectations for it. Slow paced but interesting.

Just watched The Cove documentary. This is one of those documentries that gets to you. Glad those guys got the coverage. Excellent film.

The Visitor (2007) - Excellent, makes you think about the immigration issue from a different viewpoint.

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
Leaving Las Vegas. I picked this up for 9.99 at Best Buy last week. I love this movie, but never got the DVD for some reason, so I went straight from VHS to Bluray. I love the film as much as ever. The Bluray is faithful to the source, so the film is so grainy at times it looks like the image is going to break apart. The film was shot on 16mm (on a super-16 camera) and blown up to 35mm. I love me some film grain, but I can understand how some would be turned off by it. Even for me, it was distracting at times. One last thing...the disc is BARE BONES, not even a menu screen.

Stone - Deniro and Norton are excellent as always, and Milla turns in a fantastic performance as well. The plot fizzles in the third act though.

The Assassination of Jesse James

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
The Stendhal Syndrome - Beautiful transfer. Blue Underground constantly puts out great discs. As for the film, solid first half and a crappy second half. Far from the worst Argento film I've seen.
(500) Days Of Summer- Great transfer. Absolutely loved the film. |
re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
Fargo- the movie is one of the few flawless movies I've ever seen
PQ 5/5 fantastic film like transfer/AQ 5/5 fantastic as well |
re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
Machete Buckets of blood, Lohan and Alba skin, high bullet and body count and 70's drive-in style editing. What more can you ask for?
Karate Kid kid gets beat up, kid learns to defend himself, kid finds redemption. Holy shit just like the original. Not bad just didn't need to be remade. Found myself getting pretty bored pretty quickly. When the antagonist is a foot and a half shorter than a China lady teacher it's tough to get a total bad-ass rep Heartbreak Kid Watch this every few months. Malin Akerman was great in this. She has been nothing but window dressing in other movies that fared much worse (Couples Retreat, Proposal). Maybe had they given her more to do the movies would have been better |
re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
How to Train Your Dragon - Even better the second time. Great PQ and audio.
The Social Network - You don't have to be a Facebook user to appreciate this fantastic film. I am still holding out joining FB...and I thought this was an awesome film. The cast was fantastic and the soundtrack by Reznor and Ross was equally good. Monsters, Inc. - Classic. Looks and sounds great. |

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
The Last Exorcism - Saw this in theaters, hated it, fell asleep. Got a review copy and watched it again, and I liked it much more. It helps if you know the ending ahead of time, I think. Good PQ for a film shot doc style, AQ was excellent. Lots of bonus features.

Legends of the Fall - The reviews were pretty much on target about the soft picture, but it's a great movie and still looks and sounds better than the DVD. |
re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?
Knight & Day - Even though Diaz is annoying and I seriously wouldn't even fuck her, I like this movie. It's fun, full of action and Cruise is solid. PQ 4/5, AQ 4/5, extras 3/5.

Hot Rod - One of my favorite movies, it was great to finally see it in HD.
