If you are coming out of the closet this movie would probably hit deeper. Still it had some funny moments. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....5L._SX342_.jpg The ending still gets me and shed some tears. One of Tim Burton's unheralded masterpieces. |

A guy that looks like Ice Cube and an aging flabby King Leonidas make a for a fairly typical heist flick. All the requisite "almost caught" moments are there along with a twist at the end. Some good gratuitous nudity and a crapload of bullets flying made it a decent rental but not a keeper. |

The Endless...absolutely terrible and looked and felt completely amateurish. The look was not theatrical. Spring was much better looking and I don’t remember the muddled mess this was. I still have no idea what happened in this outside ufo cult and don’t really care.

Hadn't seen this in over thirty years. Just as good as I'd had (vague) memories of it being. Was a little surprised how beautiful the Bd looked- crystal clarity and bright, potent colors. Excellent Jerry Fielding score too, which I'm now hoping gets reissued someday. The only off note for me was the presence of Sondra Locke. Objectively she was't terrible but her presence in all the Eastwood films of this era is a bit groan inducing. I never get the impression the two are interacting as real characters- just a star and his current girlfriend getting preferentially cast. Other than that, a couple hours well spent in the HT. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US200_.jpg One of the few '70s disaster movies I'd never seen till now. Not bad, although it suffers a bit from Universals lower budget expediencies. Basic TV style flat lighting and staging, coupled with some miniature and effects work that ranges from OK to obvious. Decent cast, with a nicely low key Heston performance for a change and a great character for David Carradine, who probably steals the pic. Some of the character's fates you can see coming a mile away, but all in all it kept my attention. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US200_.jpg Enjoyable slice of '50s SoCal teen culture. A little racier in parts than I was expecting, but Dee's (and Darren's) effortless charm keep things feeling genuine. Fun to see Cliff Robertson giving some texture to the proto-dharma beach bum role. Also great to finally be able to see this in 'scope from an, as usual, gorgeous new Sony HD transfer. Very pleasant diversion for a sweltering summer night. |

Painc In Bangkok from
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg Watched the first film, OSS 117 Is Unleashed, a few weeks back and was distinctly unimpressed. On paper Matthews seemed like a solid choice for a Bond rip-off lead (although the character supposedly pre-dated Flemings Bond), but I found him surprisingly stiff. The story was no great shakes either, and TBH I've already forgotten exactly what the MacGuffin was. All I remember was the climax was relatively small stakes, with the hero's support saving much of the day by gunning down most of the titular hero's opposition. That one was in B&W at about a 1.85:1 AR. Bangkok was 'scope and in color. Matthews is a bit more effective in the second film (though, good grief, are his arms scrawny). It also has a (slightly) more interesting villain's master plan, and a more charismatic villain in general. It also hews more closely to the typical Bond template with the bad guy going up in smoke with his high tech, secret facility. Don't know that I could rate it anywhere close to even the worst classic Bond movie, but the copious location shooting in '60's Thailand, both rural and Bangkok held my attention. I also found the exotica/lounge score very appealing. At this point, I can't imagine ever having a desire to watch it again, but if I did it would be to soak in both of those aspects. |

You should watch the spoofs (or reboots, I was never sure, since it's played for laughs) of these films with Jean Dujardin - they're fucking hysterical! I imported them from Amazon a few years ago. They're English friendly and cheaper since both films are included.
I'll keep that in mind for after I finish this set. Thanks for the heads up! |

I'll keep that in mind for after I finish this set. Thanks for the heads up! Oops, yeah, Amazon.fr. I see that the U.S. has them but it's the DVDs. They have them via digital on there as well, but through Fandor. VUDU also has them but Nest of Spies is in SD. Lost in Rio is in HDX. |

Expected more from Alex Garland the guy behind Ex Machina. It was slow and boring. Glad I did not do a blind buy on this. Maybe I will watch it again someday and hopefully the weather is cooler then. |
