The X-Files: Season One - Eve. Very creepy opening with a child standing in the driveway of her house, when two joggers stumble upon her and ask her what's going on. They find her dad in the backyard, dead, with what look like two bite marks (?) in his neck.

Spoiler:
Two murders 3000 miles apart (Connecticut and California). Both fathers that died have identical daughters, even thought there is seemingly no relation between the two children. Mulder and Scully ask about in vitro fertilization, to see if the daughters are somehow related. They track down a doctor that was experimenting at the clinic where both mothers went for in vitro. She's in an insane ward. She's pretty freaky, and the actress that plays her is fantastic. Apparently the doctor was cloning herself and was created a whole new generation of offspring (they are called "Eves"). Turns out that the two little girls (Eves) were the ones that murdered their fathers. Claim they have a psychic connection. The two girls poison and murder the adult Eve, and then lie about doing so when Mulder and Scully arrive. They take the two kids to a diner and the kids try and poison Mulder and Scully. Mulder is onto them and they escape into a parking lot filled with semis. They give chase. Mulder catches them. It's got a helluva ending.

I don't know why, but this episode always freaked me out when I was young. Maybe it's cause the two little twins were genuinely scary...They reminded me of the twins from the hallway in The Shining. A very good episode...I'd say it earns a ranking of 8/10.

The X-Files: Season One - Fire. An old man spontaneously combusts and bursts into flames in his yard and his wife and staff watch in horror. Someone who looks like a gardener grins.

Spoiler:
Very funny opening, with Mulder opening his car only to find a cassette tape which he inserts into the player and a female British voice says that the car will explode if he opens the doors. It's a prank from some chick he knew from Scotland Yard. She's trying to investigate a series of murders where people were burned alive. Unfortunately, the plot makes little sense, and has way, way too many plot holes. Also, the actor who plays the main villain is very underwhelming, and I've never liked his performance. Very overdramatic...I also thought the British actress in this was horrible (not positive she's British, for all I know she was just pulling off her best British accent...in which case was terrible...She sounds like Mary Poppins)...

Underwhelming episode...Maybe merits a rating of 3/10.

The X-Files: Season One - Beyond the Sea. Great, largely Scully focused episode, with an awesome appearance by the great Brad Dourif. Basically people are getting murdered or are going to be murdered and Dourif is a prisoner that Mulder helped lock up that claims to be able to help them solve the case. Says he's a psychic. One of the best episodes of the first season. I'd rate this one 9/10.

Since my last post here (just want to keep a record online for reference)

Pretty mild today, but I can see why Bardot here would have been hot stuff in the mid 50's. Pretty standard treasure hunting plot but with Bardots true hearted character inadvertently throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

Not a great movie- even by 50's Universal Sci-fi standards- with SPFX that look alternately hokey (the man-in-the-suit T-rex and miniature water creature) to not bad (the footage of real lizards out of scale).
Fortunately the night I watched it, it was just the kind of material I was in the mood for.

aka "Anne Of The Indies"

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Fine, outside the box, pirate adventure with Jean Peters' Anne (who was schooled in the piratical arts by Bluebeard himself) leading her own pirate crew with much success, until she meets Louis Jordan who plays a French captive of the Brits.
Interesting and effective swashbuckler. Was never a big fan of Jordan's, but he is great here ...and impossibly young.

Pretty predictable. Some decent action on the train. Terrible CGI. Nice little twist after the totally predictable who-dunnit was revealed.

Story: C+
Action: B+
CGI: D-

The X-Files: Season One - Tooms. A man who has the ability to squirm/wiggle his way through small spaces is released from a mental institution. The character, Tooms, is paroled. Mulder tells Scully that his murderous ways are not yet over.

Spoiler:
Mulder tails Tooms but Tooms eventually breaks into Mulder's home. He fakes being assaulted and accuses Mulder of being the one that did it. The cops investigate Mulder's home and find evidence implicating him in the assault. Mulder finds a loose screw, meaning that Tooms entered his apartment through a vent. He stalks Mulder but eventually him and Scully manage to kill him in a shopping mall.

One of the stronger episodes...I'd rate this 7/10...

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?

The X-Files: Season One - Born Again. Some cops find a seemingly homeless girl who says her name is "Michelle Bishop". One of the detectives interviews her. Next thing you know, he's seemingly thrown himself out of a window, and is dead. The girl sits their stoically.

Spoiler:
The kid gives a description of the so-called perp that threw the detective out of the window. Scully interviews the mother of the child and the mom says that her child is "disturbed." The episode goes all "Carrie" at the end.

A decent episode, 7/10.

Have to add that while the video quality for the series has been great thus far, for whatever reason the image looks pretty poor throughout this episode. Not quite sure why that is, but it basically looks like a DVD throughout the episode...Every other episode I watched before this has looked great in Hi-Def...

picking up where I left off in my last post...

https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

Kirk Douglas, John Cassavetes, Charles Durning, a John Williams score from smack dab in the middle of his most effective period, with DePalma equally in the middle of his. God, how I love this movie! This plays like a dark X-men spin off tale, way before there was ever a superhero age in movies.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

Ironic that this was pretty much the start of Travolta's decline as a star (the first time around) because I always found him highly affecting here. In fact, next to SNF, I say this was easily his best early work.
There's a little BS here (I can't buy that a magazine would reprint a controversial piece of film frame by frame over three pages, even pre-VCR/internet), and he is doing a riff on Blow Up, but I still enjoy the hell out of it. Another fun Donaggio score too.

I don't usually watch the special features, but I stuck around for Nancy Allen's interview which was just the right length and an excellent overview of the production of the film from her privileged POV.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

Oh brother. So much of Hopper's heavy drug period pontifications reminds me of the kind of stuff I was spouting as an experimenting, know-it-all late teen/early twenty-something art student.

Interesting to a point, but the amusement turned to tedium shortly before it was over (just like it did for my friends back in the day, no doubt). Fortunately the last fifteen minutes close out with a naked orgy/group encounter which helps the viewer muscle through to the end.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

Not the Grand Guignol horror movie it sounds like from the title. Mostly tepid, but still entertaining, murder mystery, with locked doors and crypts and hidden secrets.

I developed a big crush on a more mature Lili Palmer when I first saw her in Counterfeit Traitor and But Not For Me decades ago. So it was a real delight to see her here in a pre-code mystery when she must have been just on the cusp of her late teens/early twenties. I'm smitten all over again.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

I enjoyed this one so much more than the bigger budgeted, more bombastic Gator. The extended car chases at the end represent a little flab, but otherwise it's an effective and entertaining revenge/action movie with serious regional color (the deep South being what it is, this might be one of Burt's few movies that feels like it hasn't aged all that much in over 40 years).

https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_US218_.jpg

Very cool early Michael Caine crime/heist movie, with some interesting characters that unfortunately takes a bizarre and weak dramatic twist in the last act that left a disappointing impression after a strong, compelling start.
