re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?

After viewing the first two films in the "Alien " franchise over the Memorial day weekend, I revisited "Alien 3" and "Alien Resurrection" over the last two nights. Though far more believable than "Aliens," the only thing I can say about "Alien 3" is that it was unfocused and plodding. I know the production was troubled from the start and David Fincher has pretty much washed his hands of the whole affair, but you get the distinct feeling a far better film should have emerged from that material. Finally, I once again found "Alien Resurrection" to be just plain awful. It's a film bereft of any likable characters and by the time the credits roll, you're just happy it is over. As with the sequels to Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," Ridley Scott's brilliant film "Alien" is not served by the films that followed. I could probably be happy just owning these two gems and parting with the sequels. Tonight it's "Prometheus" in 3D. And Saturday night I'll catch "Alien: Covenant" at the local megaplex. I guess I'm a masochist.

I can forgive it's false, schmaltzy, oh so Hollywood next to the last shot, because the rest of the film was such a riveting piece of work. Garner and Rod Taylor at the top of their game. Another WA winner released this year.

Wow. Been hearing about this film for years, but no good option for viewing it properly seemed to exist. This UK R:B blu is from an older Universal master and shows a slight degree of noise reduction and EE, but the narrative and filmmaking is so compelling, that I found it easy to look past once it got going.

It's amazing that Universal has treated this movie with such disdain here as it's clearly one of the best serious sci-fi films ever made. The lack of a traditional cathartic ending might be what's holding it's appeal to the studio back, but it's an ending that fits the story and plays better as I think about it in retrospect.

A blind buy which was very good. Great they went with the R rating. Very good story instead of the gone to the well too many times Magneto storyline.

Distinct difference between the 4K and the BR. Probably equal to Oblivion which was the previous 4K winner in my collection.

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?

Other than seeing Catherine Oxenberg stripped to her skivvies and sacrificed, I never really had any interest in this back when it was ubiquitous on VHS rental shelves. However I recently had been looking forward to finally seeing it in a more ideal (than VHS+ TV) setting. Mildly amusing, but nothing I can ever see revisiting in the future.

Hell of an odd duck. The premise sounded engaging, and I always thought Brian Wimmer was a likable enough presence during the China Beach era, that he should have had a more substantial career. But this movie was just all kinds of wrong headed in terms of POV, structure and focus. I'm a bit slack jawed reflecting back on what a misfire it was.

After not being too engaged with the opening Punisher-centric eps, I perked up with the introduction of Elektra and for about the next 6 eps was enthralled. As good as the first season was, I was even more impressed with this one as they were doing an incredible job of juggling multiple sub plots, and giving each character a solid through line and building up to what looked to be an epic, freaky final balls out confrontation. I was even on board for the alterations to the Elektra/Matt/Stick element that were a massive deviation from the original Miller story lines. As long as it was gonna pay off, I'd be happy. And then somewhere in the last three eps it all went to shit.
Lousy end to the season that makes everything that came before worse upon reflection.
Massive disappointment.

Fun movie. Loved it in the theater. Got this at BB yesterday saw it last night. Watson's singing is a bit weak but she certainly has the charm to pull off the lead role. Aaron will love this next statement; This picture was so gorgeous I can't imagine how a 4K disc could be any better.

Found myself disappointed in the reveal on this one.

Season 2 Mad Hatter eps from

First eps of this I can recall watching this year. Had been very burned out on it, but West's death created some urgency to dip in again. Enjoyed these two, and liked David Wayne's performance far more now than I did as a kid.

Outstanding. I'd forgotten Rod Serling adapted the screenplay. Although I'm still disappointed/ sick about the Kirk Douglas/Natalie Wood story, I have to admit he gives a wonderfully restrained, atypical performance here. Everyone is great and the subject matter probably creates more tension now that it ever has. Kudos to WA for making some spectacular choices this year.
