Spoiler:
Decent police procedural set in the then still Soviet Russia. Three bodies found in the park, buried in the snow, all with their faces ripped off. Some gore and the Russian setting give some needed texture to what is generally a mystery thriller with many elements that seem quite familiar. Satisfying third act though helps to leave a more positive, than not, impression. The Soviet setting is actually intrinsic to the characters motivations and plot complications and not merely window dressing, which is another point in the films favor.

"The Silver Surfer sucks!"
From the comic book fonts used for the opening credits, to the stylized cheesy rear projection work, I've always been fond of this one. Yes the original is better in every single way, but I still enjoy Gere's manic energy, and his low wattage thug has a lot of charm (though the character does become taxing well before the run time is up). Not as keen on Kaprisky as I used to be. When I was 16 her sex kitten, eye candy surface appeal was more than enough. Now, not so much.
My enthusiasm started to flag a bit towards the end, but I was still happy to see this again- and thankful that I could finally watch it in the proper AR after all these years. Solid looking disc that renders the pop art colors throughout well.

Frankenstein

A hour and 17 minutes running time which seems like the length of a animated movie.

No music or score in the most dramatic scenes. You could not do that today.

I might watch a movie again just to hear the commentary from the film historian since it is only 1 hr and 17 minutes.

Spoiler:
Very good film bordering on exceptional. Some pacing issues I felt held it back a little, but the cast is packed with talent and the themes and characters rich enough that you can't help but get something out of it. And while I actively avoided this as a kid in favor of the more comic-bookish Universal product, as an adult I find it vastly more engaging than many of those Uni classics now.
Startling to see Edmund O'Brien looking so young and slim here after knowing him only from his 50's noirs and comedies. Looks a little like Jimmy Fallon and Justin Long's love child.
The Blu-ray looks, for the most part, excellent. Some shots here and there are a little dupey, but when it looks good, which is most of the time, it is extremely pleasing.

Spoiler:
Never been a big Argento fan. I've never gotten the appeal of Suspiria, and the more slasher-centric stuff just leaves me cold.
This one, however, I've come to really enjoy for all it's batshit loopy charms- the dialogue from someone for whom English is clearly not their primary language; the jarring, heavy metal music cues; the beautiful Swiss Alpine setting; the mash up of tone with the R rated serial killer slasher elements clashing with the PG fantasy of a teenage superheroine who communicates with insects. It may be a flawed movie, but there's really few other things quite like it.
Connelly, despite her young age here, is a charming and very capable lead too.

I've seen people criticize Arrows release but I thought it looked just shy of perfect. Maybe three or four quick shots had some object that displayed a slight electronic edge...but I'm being extremely nit-picky here. I didn't notice any compression related artifacts. Synapse is working on their own release that I'm sure will be good, but I didn't see anything here that made me regret picking it up. Region free, a nearly seamless reconstruction of the longer Italian cut (with subs effortlessly popping up for the undubbed footage), and pretty damn inexpensive dual format release to boot.
And anyone that says this is simply a standard def upscale, doesn't know what they are talking about.

Trying to be a combo of Mean Girls and a spy film.

Around the World With Orson Welles -

This certainly isn't for everyone but it's a fascinating relic of an earlier era. Welles made this European travelogue for British television in 1955.

Unfinished Business

It had some LOL moments but it felt long for a 90 minute movie. Dave Franco should thank his brother James for a career since he has no talent.

This is 40.

The jokes still hold up after a second viewing and one of the better comedies to come out the last couple of years.

Not a masterpiece, but decent. If you like the genre and Barabara Steele, the BD looks pretty good:

Aftershock (2013)

I've had this BD for awhile now, but never made the time to watch it until last week. Wow, I would have never expected a disaster movie and horror movie mixed into one. This movie was pretty nuts.

Mission: Impossible III...very entertaining. finished my quadrilogy after seeing RN. really saw the unevenness in the various films except for GP and RN. but, they were decent in their own right. don't think they hold up as well as other franchises, but dammit if i don't like Cruise as an actor.

The Gunman

Kind of boring and you expect better from Sean Penn. I think it had 3 writers.

Started watching Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (from the Percy Jackson Double Feature BD) but the damned disc started freezing badly at about the 44 min. mark and we had to abandon watching it. Guess I'll have to exchange that for another one, hopefully the replacement will play a little better.

Should have won for Best Picture IMO.

Eh, didn't care for it as much as the first. My daughter enjoyed it though.

Sayles best. I haven't watched this in years, and it holds up incredibly well. I really wish there would be some kind of HD version of this somewhere. Criterion worthy.
