John Wick

The sound is simply killer. Didn't realize how many shallow focus and soft focus shots there are in this movie.

An excellent new thriller, Poker Night. A very intense, fresh spin on the tired serial killer formula. Ron Perlman is the nominal lead, though it's more of a supporting role.

Great performances from a great cast in an otherwise shit movie. I don't know why I keep giving Iñárritu a chance - I've pretty much hated all his movies. This is a movie about nothing and it has nothing of import or of value to say, also, it's annoying - everything about it is painfully obvious and its long-take style, instead of drawing you in, just distracts and draws attention to itself.

Fantastic movie! Washed the shit taste of Birdman right out of my mouth. Great performances aside, it's everything Birdman wasn't. A style in service to the movie instead of itself. Insightful comments on both character, behavior and society, without beating you over the head about it, AND it was entertaining as hell, with some very effective tension building.

The wife and I saw this on Valentine's Day. It's one of our favorite love stories.

re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?

Eps 1-8 Tuesday night, Eps 9 & 10 last night. Scrambled to squeeze it in before I hit the road for two months this morning. The production values of this stagger me, as always, and a lot of good stuff went down. But I dunno...it seems like it's become so de rigueur for a "shocking" fatality every couple episodes, that I think I'm starting to lose touch with the material a little. What used to seem edgy and unpredictable now just seems like "and then this happens and then this happens and then that happens..." Maybe it's just feels frustrating because 10 hours goes by quick and instead of having the satisfaction of watching something move inexorably towards a point, it's more like in the midst of advancing in a certain direction the cart gets up ended and all of sudden we are moving in a different direction following all the newly spilled fruit. Constantly, over and over.
Obviously they are doing something right as I would have easily watched another twenty hours if it was there- I just hope that when it's all said and done, there is some pleasing form to it all instead just a lot of events of transient intrigue strung together until "the end".
