"Mission Highly Improbable" from
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...cL._AA160_.jpg First off, if I hadn't read about the "PAL" pitch, I'm not sure I would have immediately noticed it. I don't have a musical ear, but I am familiar with the sound of the 4% speed up on other material and it's ranged from highly annoying to mildly distracting. This release, to me, is barely the latter. Since MacNee and Rigg are the only two regulars, they're the only voices you can gauge the affect by. Rigg sounded fine to me and MacNee only slightly higher pitched. YMMV, but I was happy to find that this was a flaw to the set that I can very easily live with. Especially in light of how beautiful the image looks. This is an insanely massive leap ahead of the lousy A&E sets (and the equally weak Lionsgate re-release from last year). Colors and textures are vibrant and immediate. And you can see every last freckle on Riggs nose. All the more amazing considering how many episodes they crammed onto each disc. For $17, this is easily one of the best value purchases I feel I've made all year. I would happily take a Season 4 just like it (slight pitch issue included). BTW- I chose that particular episode because someone on another forum said they noticed a lip synch problem with the audio. There wasn't any problem at all on my equipment. http://www.vcientertainment.com/imag...ay-170x170.png God bless the 70's! While I'm not sure it's exactly a lost classic, it is a pretty remarkable psycho drama- with some wildly un-PC sequences- about the relationship between a new wife and her very disturbed, 11 year old stepson that's hampered by an obtuse climactic hallucinatory dream sequence and a very abrupt denouement. Competent performance by Ekland, and an even more impressive turn by the kid. It's the kind of movie that's probably going to seem much more remarkable the longer I ruminate on it- if for no other reason than it could never be made today. Unfortunately VCI's presentation is a mixed bag. It's mastered from a print generations removed from the OCN or IP and as such is soft, lacking in fine detail and fairly contrasty. Supposedly it's been restored, but the footage in the TV spot that can be seen in the extras looks a couple notches better than the actual film. Some compression artifacts were also visible in a couple dark sequences. I was happy to finally get a chance to see the film, but the presentation does leave a little/lot to be desired. |

First 6 eps from
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...UL._AA160_.jpg By the end of the third two-parter (the first Joker ep), it feels like the honeymoon is almost over and I can tell already I'm going to need to slow my pace with this stuff. From here on out I'll probably limit myself to 2 eps a week. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...tL._AA160_.jpg Billy Wilder in the twilight of his career, with a story riffing off the mystique of Garbo. Up until about the halfway point I thought it was entertaining but slight and could see why it never seems to get much mention in discussions of Wilder's impressive oeuvre. But mid-way through it dispenses with the mystery aspect of the title character (which anyone should be able to guess 5 minutes into the movie) and the rest of the film fills in all the blanks in a satisfying way. Wilder's knowingly cynical, deadpan humor shines bright at the end with a lot of jabs at the dream factories of Hollywood and vanity of it's stars. Ultimately very much a cousin to the superior Sunset Boulevard, but still a quality, worthwhile effort in it's own right. Happy to finally get a chance to see it and I wasn't disappointed. No extras, but quite a nice transfer- although the fine lines on Bill Holden's Carl Kolchak attire early in the film (striped Searsucker suit and straw hat) do moire a little. |

Found the movie very entertaining. Really like the impossible take on Groundhog Day but it's sci-fi so anything goes. |

X-Men Days of Future Past
Probably the best X-Men movie so far. I Am Legend. Good though it had the potential to be great. Mr. Peabody and Sherman. I was surprised how funny it was. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg http://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/i...anvasWidth=640 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...eL._SY300_.jpg |

I saw the BD for $3 at Big Lots. I couldn't pass it up. I saw it on HBO when it premiered. It actually got better as it aged. |

Fortunately I put enough time between the last viewing that I had only a vague memory of the general twist(s), and had forgot enough of the specifics to still be engrossed. Some reviewers have found the PQ bland or disappointing- I thought it looked great. Very natural and perfectly film-like. |
