Netflix increases price for Blu-ray (Oct 2008)
E-Mail notice:
As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive than standard definition movies. As a result, we're going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your monthly membership charge, for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies.
The additional charge for unlimited Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details. If you wish to continue getting Blu-ray movies for $1 a month more, you don't need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account at the Netflix website.

This move isn't surprising, since it's been speculated about for a while.
I haven't rented a BD yet, nor have one in my queue, so I didn't receive an email. This message appears for me on the Blu-Ray genre page:
On the movie pages, there's a "Learn More" link next to Blu-Ray under "available formats." And on my account page there's a "Add Blu-ray access" link.

To add movies in the Blu-ray format, you must first enable the format for your account. Enable Now >>

I'm quite content with the minimal increase even though I only average about 2 Blu-ray rentals a month.

I'm not happy about it especially since I'm sure selection and service won't improve, but I'll live with it. I received both Iron Man and Can't Hardly Wait on Blu this week despite Iron Man showing "Very Long Wait." So I can't complain too much.

I thought it was a repost as well and wondered why they didn't see the previous thread that's been around for a couple of days. But then I noticed the timestamp on the OP here and the OP in the other thread and they're only a minute apart. The other post may have not even been posted when he went to start this thread but was posted before he finished posting his. I guess this one just got buried for some reason. So I wouldn't be too harsh on him for this repost.

is their blu-ray service worth the money and will you get the new releases during the first week 90% of the time or do they put them on a long wait?

Your mileage may vary. I used to get a lot of the new releases during their first week, but over the past two months or so, Netflix has been skipping over Blu-ray titles in my queue despite them being available; they entered "Long Wait" before I was able to get a hold of them, which kinda pisses me off.

The service pretty much remains the same, -if its a hot title, you can get it the first week or you're going to have to wait a while; most of the BD titles in my queue became available after a week or two and I've little change in their status, -they seem to just sit there waiting.
However, there are also some BD titles they don't carry, -the original "Day the Earth Stood Still", the "Austin Powers" films, "LA Confidential" to name a few. Still, its cheaper than renting ala carte from Blockbuster at $5 a title.
Of course, the two titles that have been at the top of my queue for months now are standard DVDs.

In the past two months I've gotten the following within a week or so of release:
Can't Hardly Wait
Iron Man
the Happening
Kung-Fu Panda
Hancock
Tropic Thunder
Incredible Hulk
Get Smart
So either I'm really lucky or they've actually improved service.

that would suck if they blu rays were always on long wait and you had to settle with renting the standard dvds
I think they might punish me since I return movies frequently and don't keep them at home for a long time.

Whenever I have a new release in my top slot and I get a disc back so it's received on Monday, 99% of the time I get the disc. Just have to manage your queue and returns.

I have Blockbuster now, but may switch to Netflix to use the 360 streaming. It shows 3 dvds out at a time for $16.99. Is that including the extra $1 charge for BD, or will this plan actually be $17.99?

Just got an email saying that the price is going up YET AGAIN! Fucking fantastic. This time for 3 out it is going from $1 to $4 more per month. Guess I'm switching to Blockbuster until they do the same.

Yep. Here is the email:
I was fine with a dollar. Not so much with 4 bucks. BDs aren't that much more than dvds it seems. So why such a large jump?
Dear Brian,
You are receiving this email because you added unlimited Blu-ray access to your account for $1 a month. The number of Blu-ray titles has increased significantly and will continue to do so. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you've probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.
As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 3 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $4 a month. The price of your 3 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $16.99 a month.
The new charge for Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after April 27, 2009 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details.
If you wish to continue unlimited Blu-ray access for $4 a month, you don't need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account.
If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-923-0898.

Screw that. I'm out.
If I cancel online, how long do I get to return the disc(s) I already have?

Re: Netflix increases price for Blu-ray (Oct 2008)
There's also the point that Netflix likely buys wholesale, so the discounts we get from retailers from certain discs don't apply, so BD's additional costs for them is more than it would seem to us.
However, there's also the possibility that Netflix found a correlation between users that opt for BD and users that borrow more discs per month than average, so this a sly way to charge them more, while publicly rationalizing it as a difference in disc costs.
