I was dead-set on getting the slipcase version this morning.. but seeing the SE packaging next to it, I had to give in.

The case *IS* a hard acrylic (and not the flimsy plastic slipcover that you get on some TV-on-DVD releases). The bullet on the cover is metal (and not just painted on). The "black case" is also quite nice and sturdy.. unfortunately, once you get inside it's a different story.

The "target" disc holder is a loose piece of cardboard with a DVD "hub" in the center, and both discs stacked on top of eachother. Not the worst I've seen by any means, but also not what I would've preferred (the cardboard is double sided - White on Black or Black on White.. It would've been kind of nice if there was a hub on each side so you didnt have to stack.

The "magic motion" piece (for lack of a better word - can't recall the name for them) is a thin card sandwiched inbetween 2 acrylic pieces (with magnets on all 4 corners). It can look good in the right light, but it's not something you can "display" since it just looks like a jumbled mess when it's sitting somewhere.

The "postcards" are kind of nice - they're glossy, double sided (bug logo on one side, picture on the other) and about blu-ray case size. The "book" is a stapled-together softcover flip book of about 15 pages (about 2 pager per character, consisting of mostly pictures.. but also basic info (name, origin, strength, etc..)

Going by the packaging I was expecting this to be one of the nicer Special Editions.. but I was disappointed with the contents inside. It just didnt seem to carry the same quality that the packaging had. That might be an error on my side by expecting too much, but from someone who is a big fan of Special Edition releases, I was a little letdown by the quality.

The hard case sounds great...but the insides bleh. If Amazon blows these out one day I might bite on it.

Thanks for the description SPIDERone. The case sounds pretty sweet.

I just took a few photos of the set for anyone interested - sorry they're so close up, I only have zoom lenses

(let me know if there are too many or if they should all be links instead - I tried to resize them)

Case comparison size:
Wanted (Blu Ray) / Grindhouse (DVD) / Resident Evil (Blu Ray)

The case is about the size of a DVD Case (which, if your DVD shelves are set to fit Blu Rays (like mine are) it can be a problem)

Acrylic Thickness:
(Blu Ray disc inside for size comparison)

Photobook thickness:

Whoa, cool pics. Thanks for posting those. If this was me 5 years ago I would have easily caved for the fancy set, but these days I think i'm more responsible and realized I don't have much use for those now

I really like the deluxe set. Took a look at it in-store today. The thing is pretty hefty (in that it could knock you unconscious if it ever fell off the top shelf of your bookcase and onto your head) but feels like overkill for one movie. If it was at least 10 bucks cheaper, then I'd get it, no question.

I ended up buying the regular Blu-ray from Target today. The slipcase looks cool at least. I didn't care that much for the movie (mostly because of a really stupid plot point) but my girlfriend really liked it and hopefully i'll have more fun with this again.

Just out of curiosity, which plot point are you talking about?

I can't speak for fumanstan, but I can tell you that the 'Magic Loom' killed this movie for a lot of people.

I enjoyed the movie in the theater. I went ahead and bought the regular blu-ray at Best Buy and got the free lithograph. I am having buyer's remorse at paying $26.99. I don't like paying that high a price except if it's a special case like Iron Man or something like that but I bought it anyways but I haven't opened it yet...lol.

That is exactly what I was talking about. I love brainless action as much as the next guy, but for some reason this stopped the movie in the tracks when I was watching this in the theater and made me think "wait, seriously? this is everyone's motivation?"

But yeah, the visuals should kick ass so hopefully I can look past that on repeated viewings.

I'm the opposite. I became responsible a few years back and haven't bought many SEs, but caved for both this set and the Freaks & Geeks one this week.

Thanks for the picks SPIDERone. I can't wait for it to arrive from Amazon.

Did anyone notice two different types of surfaces for the slipcover? At Best Buy, they had a smoother one and one that had more of a rough feel to it. They both looked the same but had a different feel to them.

Thanks for the info/pics SPIDERone

I'm on the fence about getting the SE. Though I don't like the discs being on stacked on each other, I just can't stand the DVD or Blu-Ray artwork

Just bought the 2-Disc at FYE, I was wondering, can I send the price tag as proof of purchase? I really don't wanna cut out the UPC from the back but its 7 dolla rebate and I kinda regret paying $32 for it.

Yea, that packaging is really nice.

I havn't seen this yet so I have no clue if it's any good or not! I thought the trailers made it look stupid. I think I'll wait for a price break.

I bought mine there earlier - I bought the gift set, but the cashier said that all they really care about is a barcode and that they will accept the price tag sticker (since it has a barcode on it). She said that she's done it several times and without a problem - if theres a problem, you can always send in the UPC later.

The $32 price is what drove me to get the CE ($42.99), since I wanted the free poster they were offering

Did you guys notice that some slipcovers came with a foil cover while others had the regular slipcover?

I have a spare BD case I'm going to put the movie in with a custom cover. Two birds with one stone. Gets rid of the disc stacking and horrible artwork.
